Prosecutors: Woman Stole from, Punched Elderly Tenant

The Upper Marlboro woman faces theft and assault charges.

A woman who was allegedly running an unlicensed assisted living facility stole money and punched a senior who was living in the Fort Washington facility, according to the Prince George’s County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Zainab Kamara, 49, of Upper  Marlboro, was indicted Thursday on theft and assault charges after prosecutors say she had been taking control of her tenants’ ATM cards and checking accounts, telling them she needed their money to pay for the food and other services she was providing.

According to a statement released by the State’s Attorney’s Office, Kamara is accused of using one resident’s ATM card to steal more than $2,000 dollars. When the tenant realized her account had been emptied and that she had not been getting the services Kamara promised, she tried to get the card back from Kamara, according to a statement.

When confronted, Kamara allegedly punched the woman in the arm, where she had a dialysis port. According to the statement, the victim had to have surgery to repair the damage to her arm.

“We take all crimes very seriously, but those committed against a vulnerable senior citizen are especially disheartening,” State’s Attorney Angela Alsobrooks said in a statement.

“We simply will not tolerate people attempting to take advantage of our seniors and attempt to rob them of savings and financial security that they have spent their lives working for.”

A bench warrant has been issued for Kamara, who was indicted on two counts of theft under $10,000, one count of second degree assault and one count of obtaining more than $500 from a vulnerable adult.
