When Do Fall Sports Begin in Prince George’s County?

Find out when tryouts start and what paperwork you'll need before getting on the field.

Calling all aspiring quarterbacks, soccer stars and cheerleaders—it’s almost time to try out for your fall sports teams.

Athletic tryouts at Maryland high schools begin August 14. Students interested in joining fall sports teams should begin attending practices that day.

At Dr. Henry A. Wise High School, students will practice for a week and then receive a written evaluation. The evaluation will notify students if they made the team.

Athletic director Jason Gordon said students are excited to try out for football after the team won the 4A State Title game last year.

“It’s really an exciting time,” Gordon said. “A lot of students want to participate in high school sports this year.”

Enthusiasm for sports at Wise is not exclusive to football—Gordon said students have expressed an interest in basketball and track as well.

The first day of school in Prince George’s County is Aug. 19, and the first matches of the season begin Sept. 6.

Before donning uniforms and cleats for that first practice, student athletes must complete the required participation forms in the Student-Parent Packet.
