The franchise owners of these popular chains are making big changes to offset costs of Obamacare, but it's causing some customers to rethink which businesses they'll support.
Several franchise owners of popular restaurant chains say that the Affordable Care Act or Obamacare will increase costs for small business owners—and in order to offset costs they are adding surcharges to bills, threatening layoffs and more. According to the Huffington Post, John Metz, a Florida-based Denny's franchise owner, is adding a 5 percent surcharge to customers' bills to offset costs for healthcare. Apple-Metro CEO Zane Tankel, who owns more than 40 Applebee's chains in the metro New York area, slammed Obamacare on Fox Business Network, Huffington Post reported, stating he would not hire any more employees and may cut the hours of current employees. But a Twitter campaign has already begun against Papa John's after CEO John …

Although there was some confusion Thursday, it's clear now that The Affordable Care Act will stay in effect, although opponents pledge they won't give up the fight. While Marylanders apparently have mixed feelings about the ruling, the response among Prince George's County leaders was upbeat. They were early adopters of the Affordable Care Act that President Barack H. Obama championed. Thursday’s decision allows the law to stand. “Today’s decision is a huge victory for the American people,” Rep. Chris Van Hollen Jr. (D-MD), whose district includes parts of …

Families USA praise court decision. Rep. Andy Harris calls for the repeal of the law.
UPDATED (3:11 p.m.)—The Supreme Court, in a split decision, has upheld the individual mandate that requires the purchase of insurance as a tax. The announcement allows the Affordable Care Act championed by President Barack Obama to move forward. It's expected that the law would offer health care to more than 30 million Americans, according to the Huffington Post. In a 5-4 opinion, Chief Justice John Roberts wrote that the majority of the court rejected arguments that the law violated the Constitution's interstate commerce clause. "The individual mandate forces individuals into commerce precisely because they elected to refrain from commercial activity," Roberts wrote. The Supreme Court is scheduled to rule Thursday on the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act, signed into law March 23, 2010. In an informal Patch poll in Prince George's County this week, readers seemed split on whether or not the Supreme Court should overturn the healthcare bill. But ultimately 53 percent of the said it should be overturned. "The Federal government has no business: zero, zip, nada, nothing... in terms of mandating anything with regards to health care," one commenter, Patch user tcmitssr, said. "Less than half of Americans under Obama's socialist medical proposal will pay for more than half of the rest of the country's health care." According to a 2009 Rand Health report, nearly 80,000 adult residents in Prince …

The Supreme Court is scheduled to decide Thursday, according to Huffington Post, on the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act, signed into law March 23, 2010. The Supreme Court’s decision will include a ruling on the constitutionality of the law's “individual mandate” requiring all U.S. citizens to buy health insurance. Opponents of the mandate say it’s an unprecedented exercise of congressional power—requiring people to buy something—and could be expanded to cars to help the auto industry, or even broccoli. Obama has argued that the commerce …
