Is Today the End of the World—Again

Dec. 21 is not the first time the apocalypse was supposed to bring down the curtain on the world.

  Many a prophet of doom has predicted the end of the world. The latest forecast is for Dec. 21, the day the Mayans foresaw the apocalypse, according to some armchair historians. Is the apocalypse coming? Are you ready?

  In 1999, tales of the “Y2K” bug sounded the doomsday alarm and people took rock legend Prince’s anthem “1999” to heart on Dec. 31, 1999: They say two thousand zero zero party over, oops out of time. So tonight I’m gonna party like its nineteen ninety-nine. When people awoke on Jan. 1, 2000, most computers were running just fine and the world kept turning.
