Riverdale Baptist Grad Signs with Orioles

Tommy Winegardner makes his minor league debut in the Gulf Coast League.

The ringtone for Tommy Winegardner's cell phone is set to "Voices," a country song by Chris Young that stresses the importance of listening to your parents. But it was the voice of Dean Albany, a long-time scout for the Baltimore Orioles, that was music to Winegardner's ears a few weeks ago. A former baseball standout at Riverdale Baptist, Winegardner was a standout infielder and pitcher this past season at the college level for Cumberland, an NAIA school in Tennessee and the 2010 national champion. He had hoped to be taken in the annual Major League free agent draft in early June, but his name was not called. But a few weeks later he got a call from Albany, who had scouted Winegardner in high school. Winegardner, who was featured in the …

Upper Marlboro School to Host First Round of Baseball Tourney

Some of the best private school teams in the area will begin play today at Riverdale Baptist.

Riverdale Baptist School, in 35 years under head coach Terry Terrill, has been one of the top private-school programs in Prince George's County and across the region. The Crusaders have sent players to the pros and college ranks, and Terrill has won more than 900 games at the Upper Marlboro school. But the Crusaders, who are 23-14 overall, will not be the top seed when the Maryland private-school baseball tournament begins Tuesday at Riverdale Baptist. Rather, the top two seeds are Good Counsel (Olney) and Archbishop Spalding, of Severn and they have first-day byes. DeMatha Catholic of Hyattsville and St. Vincent Pallotti of Laurel will play at 5 p.m. today -- weather permitting -- and the winner will face Good Counsel on Thursday at the …

Long Journey Continues for Local Baseball Player

Riverdale Baptist grad eyes a shot to be drafted by a Major League team in June.

It has been a long journey for Tommy Winegardner since he left Riverdale Baptist School, a baseball powerhouse in Upper Marlboro. Still, the former baseball star for the Crusaders hopes to continue his success at a new level if he is drafted by a Major League Baseball team in June. "I hope it happens," said Winegardner, a junior for defending NAIA national champion Cumberland in Tennessee. A shortstop, Winegardner was hitting .356 with six homers and 34 RBIs in games through Sunday. He was one of just three players who had started every game for Cumberland, which was 39-12. Winegardner said he was recruited by baseball powers Clemson, LSU, South Carolina and Florida coming out of high school. He decided to attend Division I Coastal …

Riverdale Baptist Coach Will Be Honored by Baysox

Terry Terrill recorded 900th win earlier this season for a baseball program that has produced a slew of college and pro players.

The Riverdale Baptist baseball team returned to Prince George's County this past weekend from Vero Beach, Fla., the former spring training home of the Los Angeles Dodgers. It was fitting that the Crusaders got to play at the one-time home of a Major League team, since head coach Terry Terrill has helped Riverdale Baptist to become a big-time program which has sent several players to the pro ranks in the more than three decades he has been at the helm. The Crusaders won four of five games during their Florida trip and that just added to the impressive career total of Terrill, who has been coaching the team since 1977. A 1976 college graduate of High Point in North Carolina, Terrill recorded his 900th win at Riverdale Baptist in late March. …
