The Prince George's County executive says he's dedicated to finding the 'best new leader' for public schools.
Following last week's announcement that interim Prince George's County Public Schools Superintendent Alvin Crawley would resign early, County Executive Rushern L. Baker III is pledging to help find "the best new leader" for the school district. One candidate withdrew earlier this week, and now two more have left the search process, leaving the future of the county schools uncertain.
Prince George's County Public Schools announced Friday evening that the remaining two superintendent candidates have withdrawn from the search process, citing an uncertainty in leadership as a reason. Alvin L. Crawley, the interim superintendent, and Harrison Peters notified the Prince George’s County Board of Education of their decision to withdraw Friday. Dr. Eric Becoats, another finalist, withdrew on April 2. The Prince George's County Executive is pushing for legislation that would put him in charge of the school system's budget and more, reports NBC4.
Prince George’s County Executive Rushern Baker wants to take a more active role in the county’s public education system. Baker thinks he has the solution to fix the county school system, and is pushing for legislation that would give him more control over the Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) budget and superintendent hiring process, reports NBC4. "My proposal is an effort to make our schools stronger by using all the resources the County government has to offer so that our children and families have the tools they need to be successful,” said Baker in a statement, according to NBC 4. Before the school board chooses, get a chance to meet the candidates slated to lead the Prince George's County Public Schools.
Parents, students and neighbors will get a chance to meet the three finalists for Prince George's County Public Schools superintendent Tuesday. Each candidate will host a forum for questions for 45 minutes starting at 6 p.m. with Eric J. Becoats, Durham Public Schools' superintendent, followed by Alvin Crawley, current acting superintendent at 7 p.m. and then finally Harrison A. Peters, Chicago Public Schools' chief of schools at 8 p.m. The forum will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the Sasscer Administration Building, 14201 School Lane, Upper Marlboro. The public forums will be shown live via Comcast Channel 96 and Verizon Channel 38; and http://www1.pgcps.org/tv96/. The school board will announce the new superintendent before July 1.

Residents have until Nov. 20 to weigh in on qualities they'd like to see in a new superintendent of schools.
Parents, teachers and community members have until Nov. 20 to take an online survey about the qualities they think most important in the next superintendent of Prince George's County Public Schools (PGCPS). The survey gives respondents a chance to choose the eight characteristics most important to them from a few dozen options, and also gives them the opportunity to write out more specific and personal ideas. The Prince George's County school board will talk to districts 8 and 9 on Tuesday evening.
Want to be involved in the process to find the new Prince George's County Public Schools superintendent? The county's school board will host one of their "Moving Forward" forums Tuesday evening in Fort Washington for districts 8 and 9. Students, parents, community members and schools' staff can attend. The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Friendly High cafeteria at 10000 Allentown Rd. Interim Superintendent Alvin Crawley will also be there and be available to answer questions.

Bowie residents will have the opportunity to learn more and weigh in on the Prince George’s County Board of Education’s search for a new superintendent of schools in a public forum to be held Tuesday night at Bowie High. Current Superintendent William R. Hite’s recent resignation after six years on the job has left the PGCPS top spot vacant. A 32-year veteran educator from the District of Columbia's Public Schools (DCPS) will serve as the interim superintendent in Prince George's County. The Board of Education named Dr. Alvin Crawley as the temporary replacement for William R. Hite, who recently accepted a position with the School District of Philadelphia. The Prince George's County Public Schools has officially begun the process for hiring a new superintendent by selecting a firm to help with the search.
A Rosemont, IL firm was selected to help the county's public school system find its new leader. The Prince George's County Board of Education (BOE) selected Hazard, Young, Attea & Associates (HYA) to help replace current superintendent William R. Hite, according to a release from the county's public schools. Hite resigned after he accepted a job as the new superintendent for the School District of Philadelphia. HYA will help find and screen candidates interested in leading the Prince George's County Public Schools. PGCPS worked with the executive search firm previously, the release stated, and the firm has worked with neighboring counties— Montgomery, Howard and Anne Arundel— with their searches.
