Three Suspects Arrested in 50-House Burglary Spree

Prince George's County police said Friday, the men targeted homes in Oxon Hill and Fort Washington.

Three men were arrested and charged in a burglary spree that targeted more than 50 homes across Prince George's County, according to the county police department. Anthony Nyrekie Edwards, 40, of the 2400 block of Owens Road in Oxon Hill was arrested along with David Benjamin Neal, 24, of the 2300 block of Owens Road and Jamal Cooke, 21, of the 2300 block of Owens Road. The suspects went to homes in Oxon Hill and Fort Washington taking weapons, computers, jewelry, televisions and other personal belongings, police reported. They even reportedly stole a safe with valuables worth nearly $70,000. Police said a resident helped them identify the suspects by providing a license plate number for a suspect's vehicle. Protecting Pedestrians: Montgomery, Prince George's Use Several Measures to Increase Safety

Using red light and speed cameras, targeted stings and other methods, police departments and municipalities hope to prevent pedestrian-related accidents, after a number of fatalities.

Pedestrian-related accidents have seen an unfortunate increase recently, particularly in Montgomery County. There have been 14 pedestrian accidents just this year, five of which resulted in fatalities.  There was even one incident in Bethesda where a car struck an infant in a stroller being pushed across a crosswalk. “We, the parents of students attending Bethesda Elementary School, are horrified by the number of traffic accidents and near-accidents in and around downtown Bethesda,” said an online petition launched by Bethesda elementary school parents. “The safety of this walkable haven is at risk.” While there haven’t been as many pedestrian-related deaths in Prince George’s County this year, College Park officials recognize that …

PGPD Announces Its Youngest Pilot-in-Command

The 30-year-old is the newest and youngest pilot-in-command for Prince George's County police.

Cpl. Ben Conner is Prince George's County police's newest Pilot-in-Command and he's only 30. According to the county's police department, Conner is the force's youngest pilot-in-command as of May 8, when he completed nine months of intensive training.  He always had an interest in flying, the department reported, and he was given his first familiarization flight by the PGPD Cpl. Steve Grimes when he was only 16. Conner earned his fixed wing license in Bowie and was an instructor for years, before he joined the US Army Reserves in 2009. He is a 7-year veteran of the force and is currently assigned to the Special Operations Division’s Aviation Section.

Update: Teen Identified in Fatal Clinton Crash

A 17-year-old was found unresponsive by police just after 3 p.m. on Wednesday.

Updated, May 10, 4:10 p.m.: County police are investigating a fatal crash that killed a teenager Wednesday after school. According to police, officers responded to the 11900 block of Brandywine Road in Clinton for a single-vehicle crash just after 3 p.m. They found a 17-year-old boy unresponsive inside the car and he was pronounced dead on the scene.  The teen was identified as Delanta Clark Jr, of the 10800 block of Slippery Elm Court. He was a student at Surrattsville High School. Clark was driving on Brandywine Road when he lost control of his car, left the roadway and hit a tree, a preliminary investigation revealed. PGPD Pilots Help MD Senators Pass Laser Pointer Law

The legislation restricts people from pointing lasers at aircraft.

A flight crew from Prince George's County Police Department has been "instrumental" in helping pass a Senate bill that was later signed into law on May 2. According to the PGPD, Cpl. Todd Dolihite and Cpl. Christopher Elrod—pilots on PGPD's aviation unit—helped Maryland senators pass a bill that would "make it a crime to knowingly and willfully shine, point, or focus the beam of a laser pointer on a pilot operating an aircraft." The pilots suffered serious injuries to their eyes on Jan. 8, 2013, after they were blinded by a commercial grade laser, according to police. The suspect in that case was convicted of assault and served 20 days in the Upper Marlboro Detention Center. Dolihite and Elrod testified earlier this spring in favor of the …

Police: Three Arrested in Attempted Robbery of Suitland Business

Prince George's County police capture two suspects fleeing the scene, while another was arrested at a hospital.

Three men were arrested Tuesday in a foiled attempt to rob a Suitland pawn shop, Prince George's County police said in a news release. Around 1:15 p.m., officers were called to the 4600 block of Silver Hill Road after they were told there was a shooting, the release stated. The pawn shop's security officer told police that two masked men walked into the business and when the guard confronted them, one of the men exchanged gunfire with the guard. Those two suspects then fled the scene in a car that was waiting for them with another suspect inside, police said. The men drove to a local hospital where they dropped off the injured suspect, according to police. Officers caught the getaway vehicle and arrested the two men inside. They arrested …

Prince George's Police Investigate Officer-Involved Crash in Laurel

The officer reportedly flipped his marked SUV and struck a lamppost Monday morning.

The Prince George's County Police Department is investigating a crash involving one of its own officers early Monday morning in South Laurel. According to police, officers responded to the scene of an accident on Baltimore Avenue and Contee Road around 2 a.m. A county police officer driving a marked SUV reportedly hit a curb while trying to turn onto Contee Road. The SUV flipped over and crashed into a lamppost, police said, which in turn landed on several parked cars. Speed and weather may have been factors in the accident, according to the department's initial investigation. The officer, a two-year veteran, has been treated and released from the hospital.

Prince George's Police Take Back Prescription Drugs Saturday

Residents can get rid of their unwanted or unused prescription medicines at local police stations.

As a part of a national initiative, Prince George's County Police and the Drug Enforcement Agency will be collecting expired, unwanted prescription drugs Saturday at some local police stations. This collection service is free and anonymous at the following location between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.: National Drug Take-Back Intiative addresses a public safety and public issue, according to a county police press release. "The DEA cites studies which show a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, often from a home medicine cabinet," the police stated. "In addition, many citizens do not know how to properly dispose of their unused medicine, often flushing them down the toilet or throwing them away – …

Police Searching for Serial Bank Robber

County police hope residents can help them identify the man pictured.

Prince George's County Police are hoping the public can help them identify the man pictured in this surveillance footage. According to PGPD detectives, this suspect may be responsible for two other recent bank robberies. On April 24, 2013 at 2:40 p.m., the suspect pictured walked into M&T Bank in the 3700 block of Donnell Drive in Forestville and demaded cash from a teller with a note. The suspect is described as a black male with a light complexion in his late 20s with braided dreadlocks. He wore a black-hooded sweater, a gray or black jacket and green shoes during the robbery. Detectives said they believe the same suspect robbed the Capital One Bank in Suitland on April 15 and also in Clinton on March 20. Anyone with information on this …

School Employee Charged with Sexually Abusing Student

Jason Jamar Howard of Riverdale is accused of abusing a student at Glenn Dale Elementary.

Riverdale resident and Glenn Dale Elementary School employee Jason Jamar Howard, 30, has been arrested by Prince George’s County police (PGPD) and charged with sexually abusing a student at the school. Based on preliminary investigations—including notification from the victim’s parents—police believe that Howard sexually abused a child at Glenn Dale Elementary on April 17. Police said that during an interview, Howard admitted to abusing the child on multiple occasions during the current and previous school years. Howard was arrested and charged with sex abuse of a minor and other related counts.
