Speak Out: Maryland an Island Among Secession Protesters?

Online petitions to secede surround the Free State.

An apparent wave of post-election discontent has found its way online in the form of tens of thousands of people protesting the outcome of the presidential election by stoking the specter of secession. Maryland isn't among the states represented but all four of its neighbors are. Disgruntled residents from dozens of states—from California to New Hampshire and Texas to Florida—are using the Internet to try to invoke their First Amendment right to “petition the government for redress of grievances” by asking the White House to allow their state to withdraw from the Union. The White House's “We the People” program says the administration will respond to any petition that receives 25,000 or more signatures within 30 days. Petitions that have…

How Did Prince George's County Vote in 2008?

Will the results in 2012 be similar to those in 2008?

Four years ago—on Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2008—the Obama-Biden ticket received 88.9 percent of the general election vote in Prince George's County according to the Maryland State Board of Elections. The McCain-Palin ticket, in comparison, got only 10.4 percent of the county's votes, according to the board. Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-Dist. 5) won his House of Representatives seat four years ago with 84.8 percent of the vote. His Republican challenger, Collins Bailey, received 12.9 percent of the county's votes. Across the state, about 430,000 Marylanders voted early in the 2012 election, The Baltimore Sun reported: Democrats made up two-thirds (66 percent) of the 430,000 early voters, outvoting Republicans 3.2 to 1, compared to their voter registration …

Early Voters Storm Back into Voting Booths Following Hurricane Sandy

More than 43,000 have voted early already in Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties.

Due to the dangers of Hurricane Sandy, early voting locations were closed Monday and Tuesday -- but Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley has now extended the early voting period through Friday for the entire state. During the two days that early voting locations were open, prior to Hurricane Sandy's arrival, 43,629 voters took advantage in Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties. Montgomery County According to data from the Maryland State Board of Elections 23,509 of the 616,016 eligible people voted early on October 27 and 28. Feeding Your Presidential Appetite

Local businesses help gauge the election through food and drink.

While choosing a candidate to vote for in the 2012 presidential campaign may seem daunting to some people, businesses in the area want to make sure that you are well-fed and well-caffeinated (and maybe even help predict the outcome) as you debate your selection.   BGR: The Burger Joint Reviving its popular campaign from 2008, BGR began offering menu selections celebrating the candidates’ hometowns. BGR has locations in Bethesda, Potomac, Columbia and Gaithersburg.   California Tortilla The popular Mexican restaurant has taken a slightly different tactic, honoring the candidates' personal lives: California Tortilla has locations in Silver Spring, Rockville, Gaithersburg, Bethesda, Olney, Annapolis and Potomac. Is Maryland's Political Picture as 'Blue' as Some Think?

How deep is the Democrats' hold over Maryland?

As President Barack Obama zeroes in on Maryland's sixth consecutive Democratic presidential candidate win, the state's "blue" status may not be as lopsided as history and recent polls otherwise suggest. There is little doubt that Obama is on his way to winning Maryland in next month's election; his double-digit lead in the reliably Democratic state is holding steady in polls conducted since Mitt Romney emerged as his Republican rival. And voters in Maryland haven't picked a Republican for president since George H.W. Bush edged Michael Dukakis in 1988. Public Policy Polling’s poll in May put Obama ahead 58 percent to 35 percent, with 6 percent undecided, and a mid-September poll by Gonzales Research & Marketing Strategies showed Obama …

Blink and You Might Miss Out on the Presidency

New analysis claims blinking is related to election success.

Millions of people will have their television sets tuned to this evening’s presidential debate, hanging on every word spoken by President Barack Obama or challenger Mitt Romney, but maybe they should be paying closer attention to their eyes. According to Boston College psychophysiologist Joseph Tecce, with only one exception, the candidate who has blinked more during the debates has lost the election. (George W. Bush blinked more, but still beat Al Gore in 2000.) In a story first published on The Daily’s website, Tecce bases his claim on the relationship between eye movements and emotional state—that things like stress can cause a person to blink more often and that people see it as a sign of distress. Tecce believes that the audience may …

President Barack Obama Accepts Democratic Nomination

Maryland's delegation was delighted with the speech.

By Matt Fleming, Capital News Service CHARLOTTE, NC—It's official—Barack Obama is this year's Democratic presidential candidate. Following last night's state roll call, there was nothing left for the president to do but take the stage and accept the party's nomination, while touting the past term's accomplishments and promising future prosperity. "America, I never said this journey would be easy, and I won't promise that now," said Obama. "Yes, our path is harder, but it leads to a better place. We draw strength from our victories, and we learn from our mistakes, but we keep our eyes fixed on that distant horizon, knowing that providence is with us, and that we are surely blessed to be citizens of the greatest nation on Earth." The speech …

HAHAHA Frankiegirl, you are such a silly little girl, nice comeback for a libtard, NOT!!!. I bet that is the top of the list of attack methods for you people or is it to correct spelling to give you a false sense of "superiority" over those who misspell a word now and again. Too bad you people cannot have an intelligent conversation, just grunt and groan and go on attack. Why don't you go have a …   more ›

Gov. Martin O'Malley Shines in Convention Role

The Maryland governor focused his speech on taking the nation forward with Obama.

By Julye Baughman, Capital News Service Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley used his prime-time slot at the Democratic National Convention Tuesday to make the case for Obama's record on jobs and the economy. The president "is moving America forward, not back," O'Malley repeated, hammering home the Obama campaign's slogan. Five times, he encouraged the crowd to chant along with him and wave their "Forward. Not Back" signs in unison. "Democratic governors, with the support of our president, are leading their states forward—putting job creation first, balancing budgets, protecting priorities, making the tough decisions, right now, to create jobs and expand opportunity," O'Malley said. "Together with President Obama, we are moving America forward, …

The adulatory headline gives your liberal bias away in a remarkable way. How about just reporting the facts without your obviously smitten commentary? There were conflicting opinions on the quality of the speech given by the MD governor, some not necessarily positive. Immigrant Youth Movement Builds Momentum in Maryland

Obama's deportation "deferred action" program and Maryland's "Dream Act" are fueling the JSA movement.

It was a watershed week for Maryland's “Dreamers”—a week that brought the first step toward temporary reprieve for more than 1,000 illegal immigrants brought to the country as children, and another step for an immigrant youth movement that is gaining steam as voters stare down a November referendum on in-state tuition for undocumented students. Casa de Maryland, the state’s largest immigrant advocacy group, led a push to get more than 1,000 applicants to Langley Park and Baltimore on Wednesday and Thursday for the onset of President Obama's program to give certain illegal immigrants a two-year shield against being deported. Announced in June, Obama’s “deferred action” program applies to illegal immigrants who: They must also meet one of …
