Deputy Sheriff Fatally Shoots Burglar at His Fort Washington Home

A deputy sheriff who works in Alexandria, VA, was confronted by a burglary suspect when he arrived home to Fort Washington, according to police.

Update: 6:02 p.m.: Police have identified the burglary suspect who they say was fatally shot by a VA deputy sheriff while the deputy's Fort Washington home was being burglarized. The deceased suspect is Jon Adgrain Pocknett, 20, of the 4000 block of Doncaster Drive in Indian Head, according to police. Maryland State Police Faces Delays in Gun Background Checks, Gun Dealers Say

It's taking three times longer for background checks.

Maryland State Police are taking three times longer than usual to finish background checks on new gun purchases, Maryland gun dealers said in interviews. The process usually takes seven days, but several Maryland gun dealers said it was taking three weeks or more for the agency to complete the checks. They blamed the delay on a surge in gun sales sparked by debate over new gun control regulations proposed by President Barack Obama and Gov. Deputies Arrest Felony Assault Suspect in Capitol Heights

Sheriff's deputies apprehended Kenneth Ferguson at the 500 block of Cedarleaf Ave. in Capitol Heights, MD.

  Sheriff's deputies apprehended Kenneth Ferguson in Capitol Heights, MD, on an arrest warrant for first degree assault, according to the Prince George's County Sheriff's Office. Ferguson and another male suspect allegedly physically assaulted a male victim at the 500 block of Cedarleaf Ave. in Capitol Heights, according to the warrant, which was obtained on Nov. 20. The other male suspect pulled out a handgun and shot the victim; then he and Ferguson fled, according to the sheriff's office.  Deputies seeking Ferguson found him at the 7200 block of Hylton Street, the sheriff's office announced.
