Now Open in Bowie: Lima's Chicken

The Peruvian chicken restaurant opened in Collington Plaza about a month ago.

Bowie's first Peruvian chicken restaurant, Lima's Chicken, has been open in Collington Plaza for nearly a month, and is getting rave reviews from customers. "It's programmed in my GPS to come here for lunch everyday," said one patron, who had driven 10 miles out of her way to have lunch at Lima's for a second day in a row. Through the lunch hour, both carry out and dine in business was steady. Lima's serves charbroiled rotisserie chicken with two sides in prices ranging from $6.25 for a quarter chicken to $15.95 for a whole chicken. Sides include two types of beans, two types of rice, salad, fried plantains, fried yucca, fresh veggies and french fries. Patrons can also choose from a range of Peruvian specialties, such as anticuchos (beef …

I'm excited that there's a Latino restaurant in Bowie that isn't part a chain like applebee's or chili's. Bowie needs more authentic restaurants. I'm waiting to see if we'll ever have a restaurant like Dona Azucena (a great Salvadoran restaurant in VA and one in Montgomery County that has the best pupusas in the DC area).   more ›

Bowie's Belair Engineering Celebrates 50 Years

Woman-owned company has come a long way from its origins in a garage.

From a gutter-hanging business run out of a garage on Belair Street to a full-service heating and air conditioning firm, Belair Engineering has come a long way in 50 years. Founded by Bob Herring in 1962, Belair Engineering got its start because the Levitt houses in Bowie (then Belair at Bowie) didn’t have any gutters. Herring’s father-in-law made the sheet metal and Herring made and hung the gutters on his home on Belair Drive. The neighbors liked what they saw and the rest is history. “Bowie and Belair Engineering grew up hand in hand,” said the company’s vice president, Don Risher. The business eventually grew out of the garage and several years later Herring opened up two hardware stores in Collington Plaza. He sold Levitt home-…

I have been a happy customer since 1979 when I moved into Bowie. Belair just replaced my AC/Heat this past summer. This is the second system I have installed from Belair since I moved in. My first replacement system lasted 20 years.   more ›

Bowie Nonprofit Makes Wildlife Personal

Echoes of Nature uses live animal ambassadors to educate the public about the natural world.

Have you ever wondered why frogs croak or snakes slither or rabbits build burrows? Perhaps your little one has stumped you more than once with obscure questions about wildlife you’ve seen while out on a family hike. Enter Bowie resident Echo Uzzo and her local nonprofit, Echoes of Nature. Echoes of Nature is a Bowie-based educational organization that uses live animal ambassadors to teach children and adults about the world around them. “As a kid, I wanted to be a veterinarian,” said Uzzo, who confessed to a lifelong love of animals. But after a college internship at the North Carolina Natural History Museum, she discovered that there were other way to work with animals. Her career in animal education took her to the Virginia Living Museum…

Facebook Page Aims to Bring Trader Joe’s to Bowie

Two local residents are trying to drum up enough support to convince the grocery to open in Bowie.

The recent closing of the Safeway on Superior Lane in Bowie left yet another vacant grocery front in Bowie, a grocery front that two local residents think could be perfect for a Trader Joe’s. Suspecting that they were not the only ones in Bowie who would like to see the grocery franchise in the city, Alex and his wife Lourdes (who have asked to have their last name withheld) decided to start a Facebook Page—We Want Trader Joe's in Bowie, MD—to drum up support. Bowie’s nearest Trader Joe’s is in Annapolis. There are also locations in Silver Spring, Columbia and Rockville, but there are no stores in Prince George's County. “We know what it’s like to drive all the way to Annapolis to get to Trader Joe’s,” said Alex, noting that in traffic it …
