2013 Oscar Nominations Have Definite DC Flavor

Nation's Capital features prominently in three Best Picture nominees.

Three Academy Award nominees for Best Picture prominently feature Washington, DC: Argo, Zero Dark Thirty and, of course, Lincoln. While serving as a location for major films is nothing new to Washington, DC, I can't think of another year in which so many DC-centric movies have been nominated. The Washington Post described each movie as "an engrossing, superbly crafted story that plunges viewers into otherwise opaque and unknowable worlds made distant by time, secrecy or both" and believe film attendees will be pleased that the films "enthusiastically celebrate institutions more often mired in dysfunction and public malodor." Gospel Greats Singing in Upper Marlboro Christmas Musical

Mary Mary, Bebe & CeCe Winans, Marvin Sapp and more top gospel singers perform in Evangel Cathedral's Christmas Celebration broadway-style musical.

  Evangel Cathedral has drawn gospel artist heavy-hitters to Upper Marlboro for its Christmas Celebration replete with music, a laser show and live animals. The Broadway-style musical began on Dec. 1 and plays on weekends through Dec. 16. SPEAK OUT: 2012 Emmy Nominees

On Thursday, the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences announced the nominees for this year’s Emmy Awards, which will air on Sept. 23. Leading the pack were Mad Men and American Horror Story, with 17 nominees each. The Washington Post reported that if Mad Men wins TV’s best drama for the fifth consecutive year, it would be a record for most wins in the drama category.  Among others recognized were popular comedies Modern Family, 30 Rock, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and newcomers Veep and Girls. Dramas competing for the win against Mad Men include HBO’s Game of Thrones and Boardwalk Empire, as well as Breaking Bad, Homeland and Downton Abbey.
