Animal Planet's Puppy Bowl 2013: What You Need to Know

Not a fan of football but like puppies? The 2013 Animal Planet Puppy Bowl IX is the "cutest sports event of the year" and is on Super Bowl Sunday right before Super Bowl 47.

The ninth annual Puppy Bowl will again air Sunday before the 2013 Super Bowl.  Check out the cuteness on Animal Planet from 3 p.m. - 5 p.m. (ET) on Feb. 3. The 2013 Puppy Bowl on Animal Planet will include, of course, 35 puppies in addition to hedgehog cheerleaders, the super-slow Cute Cam, a puppy hot tub for the athletes to rest their sore muscles and a kitty halftime show.  You can follow @MeeptheBird on Twitter for behind-the-scenes info, too.

Police Officer John Quarless is January's Officer of the Month for Police District I.

Police Officer John Quarless was chosen in January as Prince George's police officer of the month for police District I.  Stay tuned to Patch for features on all of January's Prince George's officers of the month. Here's what the Prince George's Police Department said about Quarless: On Dec. 4, Police Officer John Quarless spotted a car without its headlights on. While trying to conduct a traffic stop, he noticed the driver throw an object out of the driver’s side window. Quarless arrested the driver, who police say is a known gang member. Quarless also recovered the object he saw thrown, which turned out to be a revolver and ammunition. Weird, Wild Washington Area Weather in 2012

The new year looks like it will kick off chilly and dry.

  Twenty-twelve was a wild year for weather in the Washington metropolitan region. On June 29, the derecho terrorized the area, forcing President Obama to declare Montgomery County a disaster area. In the fall, while we were spared the major brunt, Hurricane Sandy caused widespread flooding, downed trees, food and supply shortages at local stores and numerous school, government and activity cancellations and postponements.   Those two weather events may have been the most memorable, but according to WJLA's website, a number of weather records were set in 2012: How does the forecast for the start of 2013 look? I know this weather is just nuts. There was like rain, and wind, and sun, and hot, and cold, and snow. Man, it was even dark at night and sunny during the days there were no clouds.
