More than 5,000 hydrants are scheduled to get a fresh coat of paint this year.
The Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission is sprucing up 5,000 to 7,000 of its fire hydrants in Montgomery and Prince George’s counties between May and November 2013. The hydrants—currently gray or white with a green top—initially are being primed in a light gray color, and eventually will have their tops painted green and the bodies gray. The hydrants will remain in use during the refurbishment and the work is scheduled to be completed by November. WSSC also inspects and maintains each of its 45,000 hydrants once every three years, and according to its website, 99.99 percent of their 45,000 hydrants are operational on an average day. Memorial Day Weekend is going to be clear and sunny, according to the National Weather Service. But you may want to keep a sweater handy. After a cloudy, wet Friday the sun will return Saturday. Expect temperatures in the mid-60s, and breezy wins, gusting as fast as 21 mph at times. Saturday night, temperatures drop to the mid-40s and winds will calm a bit. More sun Sunday when temperatures are expected to rise to the high-60s during the day, dropping to the high-40s at night. Memorial Day looks good from here, with temperatures in the mid-70s and clear, sunny skies. Temperatures will drop to the mid-50s at night.

For the first time, Prince George’s boosters hosted a nighttime reception for developers and retailers, according to BizJournals.com. And, according to a county spokesperson, things went well. “We had a very successful event,” David Iannucci told BizJournals. After three workers were hospitalized with serious burns, OSHA cited a company that does business in Landover with more than a dozen safety violations, according to a statement released by the Department of Labor. Emcor Government Services and EEC Inc., both part of the Arlington-based Emcor Group, were fined more than $60,000. The two companies both work out of Landover. EEC faces a $25,200 fine for 16 “serious violations,” according to the statement. A citation is "serious" if there is a “substantial probability that death or serious physical harm could result and the employer knew, or should have known, of the hazard.” Emcor Government Services was cited with six similar violations carrying a $35,000 penalty. This past April in suburban Maryland, home sales increased, inventory levels continued to fall and "homes continued to sell at a rapid pace," according to Long & Foster. The real estate company's Market Minute reports show that in April, homes were on the market for an average of less than two months and throughout the area. The number of homes sold also increased compared to this time last year, acocording to the report. And the number of homes for sale dropped significantly throughout the Maryland suburbs.
