Get Out: An Air Show and Tons of Family Fun

Patch pulls together a few events happening around town this week.

The big event this weekend is without a doubt the Joint Service Open House and Airshow at Andrews Air Force Base. Watch the Blue Angels take to the sky, or check out the Golden Knights parachute demonstration team. There will also be several military exhibits on display. The event is open on Saturday, May 19 and Sunday, May 20 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is free to the public. If flora and fauna are more your style, check out the Bowie Certified Wildlife Tour. The tour is from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and begins at All Saints Lutheran Church. Check out the wildlife habitats your neighbors have created in their own backyards. The tour is free to the public. I have great memories of attending the air shows at Andrews when I was a child. I wanted to be a Blue Angel, but I remember one of the pilots telling me that I could not, because stunt pilots were required to serve some time on an air craft carrier, and at that time, women were not allowed to serve on air craft carriers. Chuck Brown Dies, Share Your Memories

The Washington D.C. music scene lost a titan today. How did Brown's music impact your life?

Update: 6:30 p.m. -  Prince George's County Executive Rushern Baker has issued a press release expressing his condolences over the passing of local music legend Chuck Brown.  The statement reads in full:  “My thoughts and prayers go out to the family, friends and countless fans of Chuck Brown.  It is a sad day for so many in Prince George’s County, the Washington region, and throughout the world. Chuck Brown left an indelible mark on our hearts and minds with his very distinctive voice and incredible genre of music that he created, Go-Go. I had the great joy of ushering Chuck Brown's show at Strathmore Hall a couple of years ago. It was my first exposure to his music and unforgettable! He was amazing. The whole building was dancing - in the concert hall and the atrium.   more ›

SHOUT OUT: Do You Support a Continuous Sidewalk From Spring Branch Drive to Rectory Lane?

Patch ask readers what they think about important local issues.

The state of Maryland has agreed to fund a continuous sidewalk from Spring Branch Drive to Rectory Lane to increase pedestrian safety in that area, according to Town Board Commissioner President Steven Sonnett. However, according to Sonnett, the state will only fund the sidewalks if no residents along the planned route object. What do you think? Are you in support of a continuous sidewalk from Spring Branch Drive to Rectory Lane? Would it increase pedestrian safety, or would it cause other pedestrian hazards? Last Chance: Apply for a Scholarship, Submit a Portfolio

Patch gathers a few of this week's most important deadlines.

RJ Lambert Scholarship applications are due today, May 15. The $500 scholarship is awarded to a Prince George’s County Public School student each year. Students must be athletes and pursuing higher education.  For more information, the application, and guidelines, go to the Prince George’s County Public Schools' website. Artists of all levels have chance to have their portfolios reviewed by local gallery owners and curators. Those interested should submit a disc portfolio to the Gateway Arts Center at 3901 Rhode Island Avenue in Brentwood, MD by May 19. Check the Prince George’s Arts and Humanities Council for more information.

Get Out: Marlboro Day, Chesapeake Chorale, and Treating Mom

A few events you might want to take in this weekend.

The "can’t miss" event in Upper Marlboro this weekend is Marlboro Day. The annual street festival features crafts, music, dancing, displays food, and a parade. The event takes place on Saturday, May 12 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Main Street, in the town of Upper Marlboro. The parade begins at 10 a.m. Admission and parking are free, and there will be parking and a shuttle bus available at the Prince George’s Equestrian Center. On Saturday, May 12, Temple Solel in Bowie will hosts its 12th Cabaret Night featuring the Solel Choir under the direction of Dr Norman Lieberman.
