Prince George's County Escapes for Labor Day

Planning a Labor Day getaway? You're not the only one -- 33 million Americans are heading out for the long holiday weekend.

If you’re getting tickets to the ’s first home football game this Labor Day weekend, you may be one of the few sticking around the region.

According to AAA Mid-Atlantic, 33 million Americans will choose to vacation 50 miles or more from home this Labor Day – a 2.8 percent increase from those who traveled last year.

The number of holiday travelers this Labor Day signals a new post-recession high, and is following a trend in increased holiday travel. AAA reported that Memorial Day and Independence Day travel also increased this year.

“Despite a sluggish economy and recent rises in gas prices, the increase in expected Labor Day holiday weekend travelers is driven by improving consumer confidence compared to one year ago and American’s unwavering desire to travel,” Ragina C. Averella, manager of public and government affairs at AAA Mid-Atlantic, said in a statement.

Most people will travel by car, AAA reports, and gas prices, which are at an average of $3.72, are not expected to impact people planning to drive to their vacation spot.

For those of you driving long distances, rent a car to save some money with rental costs down 10 percent from 2011, but AAA reports you will likely pay up to 6 percent more than last year at hotels.
