Wise Football Hopes to Regroup After Loss

Pumas fall to Eleanor Roosevelt in a clash of top Class 4A teams.

DaLawn Parrish, the head football coach for Dr. Henry A. Wise, Jr. High School, used the term "springboard" to describe his team coming off its game on Saturday.

That term is normally used following a win, but the Pumas lost this past weekend. But it was not a routine loss so early in the season for Wise, a regional power that fell 23-22 on a last-second field goal to Eleanor Roosevelt in Greenbelt.

"We have a lot of young players," Parrish told Patch on Sunday. "Just because they wear a Wise uniform does not mean you are going to win. We fell behind early (6-0). You have to finish."

"I was happy with the effort at the end, but disappointed we did not play four quarters," Parrish continued. "Sometimes a loss is a good loss. It makes us prepare better. Hopefully this puts us back on the right track."

Wise fell to 2-1 with the loss. The Pumas were ranked No. 8 in The Washington Post last week while Roosevelt (3-0) was No. 18. Wise allowed 11 points in the fourth quarter to the Raiders.

"Roosevelt players and coaches did a great job. They played a lot better than they looked on film. It was a good win for them," said Parrish, who grew up in Severn and Columbia and played at Howard High. "There were a lot of mistakes and missed assignments" by Wise.

Wise hosts Bowie on Saturday. The Bulldogs are coming off a 58-18 win over Laurel. Uriah Bethea of Wise had 80 yards on the ground Saturday.

The Bulldogs are now 2-0 in the CIAA. Senior linebacker Terrance Hemsley (Gwynn Park) of Upper Marlboro had eight tackles for Bowie State. He is a product of the Upper Marlboro Boys and Girls Club.

“I think it was good win for the University and hopefully picked up the spirits of the alumni, students, faculty and staff after the tragic loss of one of our students (Dominique Frazier) earlier in the week," head coach Damon Wilson, the head coach for Bowie State, said on the school's athletic website.

A moment of silence was observed before Saturday's kickoff for Frazier, who was killed in an on-campus altercation with a roommate last week.
