Upper Marlboro Products Fare Well in Opener

Hemsley, Bailey aid Bowie State defense in win, while Monroe has four tackles for Terps in victory over Miami.

After three years at a school in western Pennsylvania, Terrance Hemsley of Upper Marlboro made his debut on Saturday for the Bowie State University football team.

And it was a good opener for the Bulldogs' defense and Hemsley, a senior linebacker who transferred from Division II California of Pennsylvania.

Hemsley, a product of Gwynn Park, had three tackles as Bowie State won, 28-7, at Assumption in Worcester, MA. William Bailey, who is from Upper Marlboro and graduated from Bowie High, had one tackle for the Bulldogs.

Ramono Flowers, a Largo High graduate, carred the ball three times for minus two yards for Bowie State. He began his college career at Central Michigan.

Bowie State quarterback Clifton Budd of Silver Spring completed 14 of 24 passes for 177 yards and two scores.

“This was an impressive win and a good way to start a season," Bowie State head coach Damon Wilson said on the school's athletic website.

Bowie State, 6-4 last year, will host Benedict on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Bulldogs Stadium.

Monroe aids Maryland win

The Maryland Terps opened their season at home Monday night with a 32-24 win over visiting Miami, and a product of Upper Marlboro aided the Maryland defense.

Andre Monroe, who is from Upper Marlboro and went to St. John's High School in Washington, D.C., had four tackles as a redshirt freshman defensive lineman for the Terps.

Next up for Maryland is West Virginia, at home on Sept. 17.

Wise High wins big

The football at Dr. Henry A. Wise, Jr. High School is ranked No. 9 this week in The Washington Post poll. The Pumas began the season with a 30-7 win over Franklin of Baltimore County.

Wise will host High Point High of Beltsville on Saturday at 2 p.m. High Point, which did not win a game last year, began its season with a 49-0 loss at home on Friday to Laurel.

Williams part of big offense

West Virginia Wesleyan rolled to a 55-3 win over Millersville (PA) University on Saturday in college football, and Corey Willliams of Upper Marlboro was part of the offensive explosion for the winners.

Williams, from Gwynn Park High, had one catch for 11 yards as his team gained 353 yards in the air.

Jesse Robertson (Douglass High) had seven solo tackles for West Virginia Wesleyan.

McDaniel sees action for JMU

Wise High graduate Anthony McDaniel had one tackle for James Madison in a 42-10 loss on Saturday at North Carolina in college football.

McDaniel is a redshirt freshman defensive tackle from Upper Marlboro.
