Water Outage Cancels Some Summer School Programs and Camps; Closes Playgrounds

Several summer programs and camps have been cancelled this week due to the water outage in southern Prince George's County that is expected to last for several days.

Summer school programs have been canceled for Wednesday and Thursday due the planned water outage in southern Prince George's County, while summer camps and playgrounds operated by the county have been closed through Friday.

Only programs held at schools in areas directly impacted by the outage—including Temple Hills, Forestville, Hillcrest Heights and Oxon Hill—will be cancelled. 

The make-up day for ESY and High School Recovery programs has been set for July 26, according to Prince George's County Public Schools. There will be no make-up day for any other PGCPS summer programs, including Title 1 summer programs. 

Here is a list of schools where summer programs have been canceled, courtesy of PGCPS:

  • Imagine Foundations at Morningside Public Charter
  • Imagine Lincoln Public Charter
  • James Ryder Randall Elementary School
  • Jessie B. Mason Regional
  • Overlook Elementary School
  • Oxon Hill Staff Development Center
  • Panorama Elementary School
  • Potomac High School
  • Princeton Elementary School
  • Samuel Massie Academy
  • Skyline Elementary School
  • Suitland Elementary School
  • Suitland High School
  • William Beanes Elementary School
  • William Hall Academy
County run summer camps at the following locations will be closed Wednesday through Friday: 
  • Glassmanor Community Center
  • Hillcrest Heights Community Center
  • Marlow Heights Community Center
  • Southern Regional Technology and Recreation Complex
  • Temple Hills Community Center
  • Tucker Road Community Center
There will be an alternative summer camp location for registered campers. The Maryland-National Capital Park & Planning Commission issued the following statement:

"The Department of Parks and Recreation is offering an alternative day camp site at The Show Place Arena located at 14900 Pennsylvania Avenue in Upper Marlboro. Staff will be available for Before Care from 7-9 am, during camp hours from 9 am-4:30 pm and After Care from 4:30-6 pm. Parents are responsible for transportation to and from this site."

The parks department is also offering a credit to parents that do not wish to send their children to the alternative camp location at Show Place Arena. 

The following playgrounds will also be temporarily closed due to the water outage:
  • Accokeek Academy Lower Elementary School (summer playground)
  • Berkshire Elementary School (summer playground)
  • Clinton Grove Elementary School (summer playground)
  • Drew-Freeman Middle School (summer teen center)
  • Rose Valley Elementary School (summer playground)
  • Walden Woods Elementary School (summer playground) 
The following safe summer programs for teens have been canceled Wednesday through Friday: 
  • Glassmanor Community Center
  • Hillcrest Heights Community Center
  • Marlow Heights Community Center
  • Temple Hills Community Center
  • Tucker Road Community Center
The following county run community centers will be closed Wednesday through Friday:
  • Glassmanor Community Center
  • Hillcrest Heights Community Center
  • Indian Queen Recreation Center
  • Marlow Heights Community Center
  • Southern Regional Technology and Recreation Complex
  • Temple Hills Community Center
  • Tucker Road Community Center

Potomac Landing Community Center and William Beanes Community Center are unaffected by the water outage and will remain open. 

The Hensen Creek Golf Course, the Camp Springs Senior Activity Center and the Tucker Road Ice Rink, North Barnaby Pool and Allentown Splash, Tennis & Fitness Park will all be closed Wednesday through Friday.
