Schools Chief "Listening Sessions" Scheduled

Meeting tonight to gather comments from residents, elected officials about qualities desired in next head of Pr. George's public schools.

The committee charged with finding a new top administrator for Prince George's County Public Schools will be holding two open forums to gather thoughts from residents about what they want to see out of the next schools chief.

As part of a restructuring of the Prince George's County Public Schools administrative functions signed into law earlier this year by Gov. Martin O'Malley, a state level search committee is looking to hire a new schools superintendent. However, the job title has been changed from superintendent to chief executive officer.

“These listening sessions are an essential step in the process as we work to identify a new CEO to lead PGCPS.  This committee is committed to transparency and input from Prince George’s County residents and stakeholders,” said Chair of the Maryland State Board of Education, Dr. Charlene Dukes in a press release issued by the county executive's office. “Over the next few weeks, we look forward to hearing qualities, attributes, experience, and criteria that the committee should take into consideration as we select the three finalists for CEO that will be recommended to County Executive Baker.”

Dukes is the chair of the search committee, appointed by the state superintendent of schools. Gov. O'Malley appointed two Prince George's County residents, Orlan Johnson and Kenneth Johnson, to fill the additional spots.

The first listening session is scheduled for the afternoon of Wednesday, June 5 in room 262 of Kent Hall at the Prince George's County Community College in Largo. From 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., residents and other community stakeholders will have the opportunity to add their thoughts to the record. Local elected leaders will have the opportunity to comment from 5:45 p.m. to 6:45 p.m.

A second conference-call-style listening session is slated for June 10, but specific details are not yet available.

County residents unable to attend either the in-person or telephone town halls can also send in questions and comments to the search committee by sending an email to newschoolsceo@co.pg.md.us.
