School Notes: Free SAT Prep, Hiring Bus Drivers, Character and Health Programs Awarded

Prince George's County Public Schools got a headstart by opening Aug. 20, and now that they are in full swing there's a lot going on.

Free SAT Prep for PGCPS Seniors

What better way to practice for the exam than by taking a trial version? For the first time, 12th graders can take the SAT for free during the school day on Oct. 17.

Buck Lodge Middle Teacher Selected As Healthy Schools Champion

A health teacher at Buck Lodge Middle School was selected as a Healthy Schools Program Champion by the Alliance for a Healthier Generation. Dr. Carolyn Goode started a Buck Lodge’s wellness council which implemented a program that includes health screenings, fitness activities and nutritious meals.

“Dr. Goode’s wellness initiatives have been instrumental in encouraging a healthy school culture at Buck Lodge Middle School,” said Dr. Alvin L. Crawley, interim superintendent of schools. “We applaud her work and hope that it will inspire similar efforts throughout Prince George’s County Public Schools.”

Rosaryville Elementary Media Center to be Renamed on Sept. 21

The Upper Marlboro elementary school will rename its media center after Regina C. Williams, who spent 30 years working in the Prince George’s County Public Schools System before she died in 2007. The ceremony starts at 8:30 a.m. at 9925 Rosaryville Road on Sept. 21.

PGCPS Named Co-Winner of Character Education Award

PGCPS was recently recognized as a school district that effectively incorporated character education in the classroom. It was named a joint winner of the Maryland Center for Character Education’s school system award.

“Our goals of high student achievement and highly-effective teaching are meaningless without safe and supportive schools,” said Verjeana M. Jacobs Esq., chair of the Prince George's County Board of Education. “By promoting character education, we encourage intellectual, emotional, and ethical development to help our students become responsible and contributing members of society.”

PGCPS Recruiting Bus Drivers

The county schools will host a job fair on Sept. 22 to recruit more school bus drivers.

Starting salary begins at $16.68 per hour, but can go up to $30 per hour. Paid commercial drivers license (CDL) training is provided to all new hires. The event will begin at 9 a.m. and run until 1 p.m. at Lake Arbor Elementary at 10205 Lake Arbor Way in Mitchellville.
