In Prince George's County, spokesman Briant Coleman said officials are carefully following the coverage to see if they should modify safety policies.

Although there are not metal detectors at every school, Coleman said, "We have strict security measures in place, including cameras, wands, other different measures in place."

He said the county has a pre-emptive approach.

"Administration [at each school] is vigilant and aware of issues that take place in the community. A lot of times things that take place in the community roll over into fights at school," Coleman said. "We work with the community, police and students tell us--they will hear something or see something on Twitter and self-report."

He said students are concerned about their safety and bring any security issues to school administrators.

At Perry Hall High, a school resource officer was present and two teachers were able to overpower the gunman, officials said.
