Local Students Win at Chess

Three Barack Obama Elementary School students placed in the county's recent invitational chess tournament.

Young chess players in grades first through six participated in the Prince George’s County Scholastic Invitational Chess Tournament on April 14 in Landover at the Prince George’s Sports and Learning Complex, reported the Gazette.

Three Barack Obama Elementary School students placed in the tournament - Maryan Eniafe placed third in the first grade competition, Victoria Eniafe placed third in the third grade competition, and Albert Mercer received top honors in the combined fourth and fifth grade competition, placing first.

Enjoy A Great Learning Experience (EAGLE) Chess Academy Participants, sponsored the event. Participants received certificates, and $50 goes to the first place winner in each age bracket, followed by $25 for second and $15 for third. All students who placed also received trophies.
