James Madison Students Facing Longer School Days

Prince George's County middle schools will see extended school days and combined bus routes next year.

James Madison and Kettering middle school students can expect to spend an extra 40 minutes each day in school next year.

Beginning in August, middle schools students who are struggling will receive an additional 40 minutes a day of instruction in math, science and reading while those who do not require extra help in these areas will receive extra instruction in subjects like music or foreign languages, reported WJLA.com.

Prince George's County middle school students would be in class for as long as seven hours and 20 minutes, much longer than their peers in neighboring Montgomery County and Washington, DC.

School officials hope the longer days will improve student performance. Currently, Prince George’s County Public Schools ranked 24 out of 24 Maryland school districts.

The move will also save money on transportation. The new middle school schedule will allow the school system to combine middle school and high school bus routes, saving the county approximately $5 million a year.
