Announcement: "To Be Young, Gifted and Black" Coming on Stage in Pr. George's
"To Be Young, Gifted and Black" captures spirit of African-American writer. Play includes excerpts of Lorraine Hansberry's works, including "A Raisin in the Sun."
LARGO, Md.— “To Be Young, Gifted and Black,” a collage of excerpts by acclaimed playwright and author Lorraine Hansberry, will be presented as a staged reading at the Hallam Theatre at Prince George’s Community College, March 4, 8 p.m. and March 5, 1 p.m. and 8 p.m. In celebration of the author’s short but inspirational life, seven actors and actresses will perform dramatic readings from her letters, diary entries, speeches and plays, including “A Raisin in the Sun.”
The production tells Hansberry’s story of growing up in Chicago with her family facing racial discrimination, and traveling to New York City to launch a writing career that culminated with an award-winning play before her death at age 34.
After her death, Hansberry’s husband adapted a collection of her writing and interviews in “To Be Young, Gifted and Black,” which later became an off-Broadway play. The production is considered a major work about the black experience in mid-century America.
“To Be Young, Gifted and Black” is presented by the Communication and Theatre Department at Prince George’s Community College. Tickets are $10 for general admission. Prices are $5 for seniors and PGCC students and employees. For more information, call 301-322-0920.
