Despite arguments for a shorter prison sentence, a federal judge sentenced the former county executive to 87 months in jail.

Former County Executive Jack B. Johnson appeared remorseful in a U.S. District Court room yesterday. 

“In my wildest dream, I could not imagine being in a place like this," Johnson said before his sentence. "I've lost everything — my reputation, everything I've worked so hard for."

During Tuesday's proceedings, attorneys for Johnson argued that going to prison would be a "death sentence" for the former politician, since he is 62 with Parkinsonism, which could lead to Parkinson's Disease, they said.

Instead, attorneys argued that Johnson should be on house arrest so he can receive adequate medical attention. Ultimately, Messitte said the federal prison system has adequate health facilities to care for Johnson.

After the sentencing, Johnson took the elevator downstairs to be processed and then he left the building without comment.
