The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program is offering free tax preparation to Upper Marlboro and other Prince George's County residents.

The program is offered through Prince George's Community College's Community Financial Center. The volunteers are trained and certified as IRS Volunteer Income Tax Preparers.

In 2012, VITA prepared more than 2,000 federal and state tax returns in Prince George's County, resulting in returns of more than $975,000 of federal tax refunds and more than $318,000 of Maryland tax refunds.

Seniors and low-income residents who used the program saved nearly $131,000 in tax preparation fees.

Families can sign up for the program is their maximum household income is $51,000, however, participants must make an appointment through PGCC's website to receive help.
