Derrick Davis Wins Primary Election

With the win, he advances to the general election.

Derrick L. Davis, who picked up high-level endorsements from county political leaders, won Tuesday's special primary election and will move on to next month's general election, according to unofficial results.

Davis and 14 others were vying for the District 6 County Council seat vacated by Leslie E. Johnson, who resigned this summer after pleading guilty in U.S. District Court to conspiracy charges.

According to the county's Board of Elections site, Davis received 2,475 votes, capturing 55 percent of the overall vote. Arthur Turner, a long-time advocate on crime and development issues, came in second with 849 votes, the data show.

With the win, Davis is set to take the council seat. The top Democratic and Republican votegetters square off in the general election. However, District 6 is overwhelmingly Democratic and the only Republican challenger -- Day Gardner -- only amassed 76 votes today, according to election results.

Davis, a native of Capitol Heights, has worked as a Constituent Services Aide within the County Council office. He now lives in Mitchellville with his wife, Sherry.
