Update: Hearing Resumes Wednesday for Preteen Charged in Toddler's Killing

Update, 5:38 p.m.: The hearing for a 12-year-old boy charged in the murder of his two-year-old foster sister will resume Wednesday morning at 10 a.m., according to the Prince George's County State's Attorney's office.

Update, 2:30 p.m.: The hearing for a preteen charged in the killing of his foster sister resumed this afternoon after a judge viewed a video of the police interview with the suspect, according to the Prince George's County State's Attorney's office.

Although a trial was supposed to begin Tuesday morning, only a motions hearing was held.

Original post, 11 a.m.: A trial against a 12-year-old boy charged in beating his foster sister to death began Tuesday in an Upper Marlboro courthouse.

According to the Prince George's County State's Attorney Twitter account, the trial is set to begin sometime today, although it could end up being a hearing limited to motions.

after the boy's father found his foster sister, two-year-old Aniyah Batchelor unresponsive in the family's Fort Washington home on July 2.

The toddler was in the care of a 15-year-old girl at the time of her death.

An autopsy performed on July 4 confirmed that Batchelor was killed by blunt force trauma and police found that the 12-year-old had beaten the toddler repeatedly, according to the PGPD blog.

The last time a preteen was charged with murder in Prince George's County was in 2006, Parker said. In Maryland, in order to be charged as an adult a juvenile must be 14; however, in special cases, this law can be waived.

The toddler's birth mother Stephany Cunningham spoke to The Washington Post after her daughter's death saying, "
