Police arrested a 17-year-old suspect, who they are charging as an adult, in the shooting of a 16-year-old male from the Capitol Heights community who refused to hand over his cellphone in a robbery, according to the Prince George's County Police Department.
Derrick Anthony Wills of the 1200 block of Eastern Avenue in Northeast Washington allegedly approached the victim on foot at the 1200 block of Nye Street in Chapel Oaks and demanded his cellphone, according to police. When the victim resisted, Wills allegedly shot him in the forearm, police said.
Police detectives on Thursday found Wills with the victim's cellphone at 50th and Nash streets in Northeast Washington, and the gun used in the crime also was recovered, according to police.
The 16-year-old boy was taken to a local hospital in stable condition, but has since been released, according to police.
Wills faces charges for attempted first-degree murder, first-degree assault, theft and armed robbery, according to police. He is being held on a no bond status.
