The fire caused $40,000 of damage, a fire official says.

An indoor sprinkler system helped extinguish a townhouse fire last night in Upper Marlboro, fire officials said Wednesday.

At about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Largo firefighters responded to a fire in an Upper Marlboro townhouse. Firefighters found light smoke coming from a two-story townhouse in the 9800 block of Royal Commerce Place. According to a press release, the fire began in the kitchen after food was left cooking unattended on the stove. Before the fire could grow larger, the residential sprinkler system activated and doused the flames.

The fire damage is $40,000. The neighboring townhouses weren't damaged.
