Second Suspect Arrested in 2012 Capitol Heights Shooting

The first suspect arrested in the November 2012 shooting was Lawson Mahdi, 24, of the 13000 block of Bishops Bequest Road in Upper Marlboro.

A second suspect has been arrested in the November 2012 shooting death of a Washington, DC man in Prince George's County.

Police arrested Joshua Jermaine Benton, 23, of the 4800 block of Benning Road in Southeast Washington on Friday, March 22, and charged him with the murder of Sharod Darnell James—more than four months after his death.

James, of Southeast DC, was found suffering from a gunshot wound in the 5600 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Highway following a report of a shooting.

According to a press release, Benton's alleged accomplice Lawson Mahdi, 24, of the 13000 block of Bishops Bequest Road in Upper Marlboro, was arrested just days after the shooting on Nov. 16. Mahdi was charged with second degree murder and related charges.

Benton is currently being held in Washington DC, awaiting extradition and was charged with first degree murder and related charges Friday. Police said the shooting may be drug-related.
