28-Year-Old Pr. George's Officer Dies After Clinton Crash

A Prince George's County police officer died Thursday after succumbing to injuries from an accident in Clinton.

Police and EMS responded to the scene of the accident at the intersection of Surratts Road and Branch Avenue, where they noted two vehicles—Bowden's cruiser and a SUV—were involved in the crash.

A preliminary investigation revealed that Bowden was driving northbound on Branch Avenue in his marked vehicle when he collided with the SUV. The collision forced his vehicle into a utility pole. He was transported to Southern Medical Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

A six-year-veteran of District 4, the married father of two—a 10-year-old son and a 4-year-old daughter—may have been on his way home from work, officials said. The officer left work at 1 p.m.

PGPD Chief Mark Magaw said that they are looking into reports that the officer was cut off on the road. Officers gathered at the hospital Thursday afternoon to mourn the death of another Prince George's County police officer in two months. They saluted his body as it left the hospital's grounds.

County Executive Rushern Baker offered his condolences to the county's police department.

“Our county government, every community and every citizen of Prince George’s County grieves again this evening," Baker said in a statement. "Nearly two months to the day, we have lost another Prince George’s County Police Department Officer, Kevin Bowden, as a result of a serious automobile accident. Our condolences go out to Officer Bowden’s family, friends and the Prince George’s County Police Department."

Officials asked for "time to heal" Thursday as the department mourns another loss of a young officer due to a traffic accident.

The female driver of the SUV was transported to Prince George's Hospital Center with non-life threatening injuries.
