UPDATE: Police Investigating Departmental Shooting in Upper Marlboro

County police shot and killed Charles Odell Smith after he attacked an officer.

The Prince George's County Police Department is investigating a police involved shooting that happened in Upper Marlboro on Saturday afternoon. 

On April 16, at roughly 2:41 p.m., patrol officers responded to the 900 block of Andean Goose Way for what police are calling an "unknown trouble." Once they arrived, the suspect’s mother told police that the suspect was firing his shotgun throughout the home. She also told officers that the suspect has a history of mental illness.   

Police officers determined that the suspect needed to be transported to the hospital for a psychological evaluation. The suspect then became agitated and fled on foot to avoid being transported. Officers chased the suspect to the 13700 block of Hotomtot Drive, where they attempted to detain him. According to police information, the suspect aggressively approached one of the officers and began to hit her in the face, head and neck with his closed fist. The suspect also tried to disarm the officer of her service weapon.

Fearing for the officer’s life, Officer Harry Bond shot Charles Odell Smith. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. During this incident, both officers sustained injuries and were transported to a local hospital where they were treated and released.

Bond, a county police officer for more than a year, has been placed on administrative leave in accordance with departmental policy.

Original report, 4/16: A Prince George's County police officer shot and killed a man in Upper Marlboro on Saturday afternoon, according to news reports.

TBD.com reports that police responded to a domestic disturbance in the 900 block of Andean Goose Way. A woman at the home told police her son was acting erratically and a gun. 

When police determined the son should go to a hospital for an evaluation, he tried to flee and assaulted an officer. Another officer, believing the first officer's life was in danger, shot the man.
