House Fire in Upper Marlboro Forces Out Family

No injuries in blaze that officials said started in a second story bedroom.

A fire broke out Monday night at a house in the 11600 block of Assisi Street in Upper Marlboro, according to fire officials.

Prince George's County Fire/EMS spokesman Mark Brady said the blaze started around 10:30 p.m. in the second story bedroom of the single-family home.

A family of five escaped before emergency responders reached the scene, according to Brady. Firefighters quickly contained the flames in the bedroom, preventing it from spreading to the rest of the home.

Investigators said the fire was caused by an electrical malfunction but did not elaborate, Brady said. The loss is estimated at $10,000.

Brady said he believed a mother, father, and the three children took advantage of an offer for temporary shelter from the fire department's citizen services unit for Monday night, but he was not certain about their future plans.
