Cancer Center Fundraiser Features Horses This Weekend

A number of Olympic, international and national riders will show their horsemanship to raise money for the breast cancer center.

Horses will strut their stuff this weekend at the Potomac Valley Dressage Association's Ride for Life in Upper Marlboro.

The two-day fundraising event will help raise money for the Johns Hopkins Avon Foundation Breast Center.

In its ninth year, there will be a dressage show, a dancing horse challenge, children's activities, shopping, black-tie gala and silent auction.

"We are very dependent these days on the generosity of others to fulfill our mission and goals of the breast center,” Lillie D. Shockney, administrative director of the Johns Hopkins Avon Foundation Breast Center, said. “The Ride for Life event greatly supports our efforts so that more patients can become survivors of this disease, as well as receive quality of care at Hopkins, and through our training efforts, also elsewhere.”

Daytime admission is free. It's $25 per person for the Dancing Horse Challenge; but free for children under the age of 10. Discounts are also available for groups of 20 or more. Tickets can be purchased online.

The event will begin 8 a.m. Saturday at the (14900 Pennsylvania Ave.) in Upper Marlboro.
