New County Website to Promote Local Farms and Farmers Markets

The website www.princegeorgesfarmfun.com – developed to  support and promote local farms, farmers markets and agricultural heritage sites – launches today to help both local residents and visitors from out of town find the best of what our county has to offer.

The website launch coincides with the start of the 2013 Maryland Buy Local Challenge, this Saturday, July 20.   The Buy Local Challenge encourages residents to eat at least one local food item daily through July 28. With www.princegeorgesfarmfun.com, shoppers will find it easy to locate one of our county’s twenty-one farmers markets, as well as numerous farms open to the public where they can purchase local foods. Additionally both residents and visitors can take their families and learn more about our county’s rich agricultural history at our agriculture heritage sites.

“Folks are more and more interested in knowing what is on their plate, where it comes from, and who produced it,” said Yates Clagett, President of the Prince George’s County Farm Bureau. “Every time we speak about buying local and the need to support our area’s farms, people ask where they can find local farm products.

“The Prince George’s County Farm Fun website will help both residents and visitors realize how varied the range of agriculture is in our county,” Clagett added. “We have an amazing agricultural history and we’re eager for people to learn more about it.”

The website, www.princegeorgesfarmfun.com, is searchable by the type of venue: farms, farmers markets and agricultural heritage sites. The site also contains an events calendar to highlight agricultural events around the county that are open to the public.
