Featured Farm(ers Markets): Markets Opening County-Wide for the Season!

Farmers markets are opening around the county, bringing you the best local and regional food products.

This season we're fortunate to have more than twenty markets operating in our county, bringing local and regional farm products to county residents. While several markets launched in April, the majority open in May and June, so be prepared to see them springing up all over.

The key to shopping well at the market is to shop seasonally; because of our cool spring the selection at market has been a bit more limited. But fear not: the heat it here and the cool-weather products at market will soon be giving way to those fruits and vegetables we dream about in the depths of January's cold and gray days. This site offers a good calendar of (approximate) harvest dates. And if you buy too much of one thing to eat, check out the National Center for Home Food Preservation to figure out how to preserve the excess.

Talk with the farmers at market about how to prepare the amazing selection of products they'll sell. They're happy to provide suggestions, and you might even discover you like something you hadn't previously (Brussels Sprouts, anyone?). Plus, the more you get to know the farmers, the more you get to know about food, and the time, energy and love they've put into growing it and bringing it to you at market.
