Get Rid of Those Old Christmas Trees

The City of Bowie will take those old Christmas trees from your curb.

If you live within the City limits of Bowie, disposing of a real Christmas tree couldn’t be easier.

Live Christmas trees can be recycled at curbside in January. Just remove the decorations and lights and put the tree out at the curb on any Wednesday in January. It will be picked up with regular yard waste.

If you live in the Bowie area but not within city limits, then Prince George’s County procedures apply.

The county's Department of Environmental Resources collects yard waste year-round, including grass clippings, leaves, small branches, brush and Christmas trees. Call 301-952-7630 for more information.

According to the county DER, yard waste must be placed in securely-tied, heavy-duty paper or plastic bags, or heavy-duty trash cans with handles and a secure lid. Cardboard boxes are not acceptable containers.

Limbs collected curbside must not exceed 4-feet in length and three inches in diameter. Bundles of limbs and bags of dry grass and leaves must weigh less than 60 pounds. Wet grass and leaves must weigh less than 25 pounds.

The county has also launched a tree recycling program. To participate, place your Christmas tree on your curb by 6:30 a.m. beginning Dec. 27.

You can also take your tree to the county's Yard Waste Composting Facility, located at 6601 Southeast Crain Highway in Upper Marlboro, Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m..

Trees will also be accepted at the Brown Station Road Public Convenience Center, 3501 Brown Station Road in Upper Marlboro; Monday through Saturday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. through January 31, 2012.
