Mother Nature Says Patience Needed for Cherry Blossom Peak

If you're waiting for the peak blooms at the Tidal Basin, you'll need patience.

The National Park Service announced on Tuesday morning that the estimated 2013 peak dates for the DC Tidal Basin cherry blossoms will be later than originally projected.

The new estimated peak dates are April 3-6.

The reason: colder-than-normal temperatures the past few weeks in March, including Monday’s snow showers.

The initial estimate for cherry blossom peaks was March 26 to 30, which forecasters had projected based on a relatively warm February and early March.

The peak dates are based on when approximately 70 percent of the blossoms are open. This year’s peak dates now match up with the average peak date of April 4.
