Landover Bridge Renovation to Begin Next Week

The $3 million project should be completed by spring 2012.

The Maryland State Highway Administration will begin a $3.3 million project next week to replace the deck on the Landover Road (MD 202) bridge over the Capital Beltway.

MD 202 is the road that connects Landover to Upper Marlboro. Weather permitting, the project should be complete spring 2012, according to SHA officials.

In addition to replacing the existing bridge deck, SHA will:

  • Upgrade the traffic detection at the ramp from westbound MD 202 to the southbound Capital Beltway
  • Install a new pole and cabinet for the existing traffic camera on the bridge
  • Resurface the roadway

Although structurally safe, the bridge was built in 1962 and is beginning to deteriorate. The work will help to extend its service life an additional 30 to 50 years, according to SHA.

The first phase of the project begins this spring and includes closing access from westbound MD 202 to the ramp for the southbound Capital Beltway. The closure will last for the duration of the project. The ramp from eastbound MD 202 to the southbound Capital Beltway will remain open during construction.
