MD Housing Dept. Relocating to Prince George's

DHCD will be the first major state agency with a location in the county.

The state's Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) will be relocating to Prince George's County, according to county delegation chair Jolene Ivey.

In a note from Ivey, she states the DHCD will be moving from its Crownsville location in Anne Arundel County to New Carrollton in 2015. The office will be located in a new mixed-used development near the Metro.

"The county has been lobbying the state for more than seven years to consider diversifying their offices to include Prince George’s," Ivey wrote. "Gov. Martin O’Malley himself announced the initiative in 2010 to have the state help invest in Transit-Oriented Development like the one promised today."

County Executive Rushern Baker also expressed his excitement about the move in a press statement late Wednesday:

"On behalf of nearly 900,000 residents of Prince George’s County, I want to thank Governor O’Malley and Lt. Governor Brown for their support for this smart and strategic investment that will significantly impact the economic future of  Prince George’s County, the State and the region.  I also want to thank Comptroller Franchot and Treasurer Kopp for their affirmative votes to relocate Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development to our County.  It was great to see a unanimous vote for a project of this magnitude.

Prince George’s County makes up 15% of the State’s population, and we welcome the opportunity to house our first state agency.  This relocation will jump start transit oriented development at the New Carrollton Metro Station and anchor a quality mixed use project that will create jobs, increase our commercial tax base, and provide retail and residential options in a new urban center."
