Upper Marlboro Radio Station Embraces Local Arts

I’ve always said that radio needs to do more to embrace filmmakers. Radio should not only promote music, it should also promote the arts to the public. In the past couple of years, internet radio has been a huge sensation across the world. And while there are plenty of internet radio stations in the country, I am proud of the outlet right here in Prince George's County. Located in Upper Marlboro, we have Mindstream Radio.

Since moving back to the States, I've reached out to several media outlets in the metropolitan area. Mindstream Radio has always embraced my thoughts and views on cinema. They have become the outlet for vocal views of all kind, a place where you can be opinionated and have your theories challenged.

A filmmaker friend of mine -- Crystle "Clear" Roberson -- came to town recently. Although Roberson lives in Atlanta, she has an impressive knack for making films with mass appeal. So what was a lady to do when Crystle wanted to be introduced to the city? I called Adam Butler and Paul Spann -- the creators and hosts of Mindstream Radio. I must say they are quite a pair. Paul Spann, with his cheeky sense of humor, is an absolute delight to be around. Adam Butler is also great to be around and is not afraid to share his ideas with you as a person and a guest.

I sat in the studio with Crystle and watched her face light up from the instant embrace she received from the Mindstream Radio family. As a filmmaker, it might be difficult to reach out to media outlets, especially when you are used to doing things yourself. However, it is important to build these relationships to protect and promote your projects. Filmmakers must understand that even though we are part of the media family, we still must do our part to associate with different media avenues.

Is Mindstream Radio the only outlet for you? Of course not, but they are definitely a great connection to make. I have been on the show several times and walked away with new opportunities each time. For Crystle, Mindstream Radio became her media outlet home away from home. I say kudos to Mindstream Radio for opening up their doors and making their station home for a lot of the area's influential people.

As a community, I see that we are showing stronger embrace to visitors, which makes them want to stay. Media platforms like Mindtsream Radio are out there but artists need to reach out to find success.
