Prince George's County Libraries First in State to Offer Kindle Titles

Patrons can now check out digital copies of books for up to three weeks with a PGCMLS account.

As we move into an increasingly paperless society, the Prince George’s County Memorial Library System is keeping pace, now offering patrons books on Kindle devices, to support the library’s “Virtual Branch” website.

The announcement was made last week with the Prince George’s system being the first in the state offering Kindle titles. The introduction of Kindle books is part of the OverDrive WIN Initiative, a series of improvements planned to support the library system’s virtual branch.

The county currently has more than 6,800 titles and is working with OverDrive to build the collection.

“We have a very strong relationship with OverDrive and have appreciated their continued support in helping us build our digital collection,” said Valerie Piechocki, Chief of Materials Management for the library system in a release.

Most titles can be used on any Kindle or compatible device, like an iPad, iPod Touch, Android, etc.  Just as would be the case with a normal checkout, the title will simply expire at the end of the lending period.

Patrons with a library card can check out and download ebooks and audio books for a period of 7, 14 or 21 days and can check out up to six items at a time. If certain titles aren’t available, they can be reserved and set up to send out an e-mail when the title becomes available.
