Farm Market Crawl: Cheverly Farmers Market

As part of our series on the area Farmers Markets, this week we're featuring the market in Cheverly.

The Cheverly Farmers Market is held every other Saturday from 8 a.m.—Noon in the parking lot of the Cheverly Community Center at 6401 Forest Road. It’s a lively market with vendors offering typical farm market fare—fresh fruits and produce, as well as fresh meats, sausages, jams and cheeses. Live music makes you feel as if you’re shopping at an outdoor festival.

The Waltz Family Farm offers locally raised pork, beef and lamb, including steaks and beef stew meat. You can even order a whole or half hog. Landover’s Simply Sausages sells a wide variety of handcrafted sausages from ground beef to breakfast links made from heritage breeds. They even offer sausages suitable for vegetarian diets. Stop by Martha’s Jams tent for—you guessed it—assorted homemade jams and jellies. You can also shop for handmade soaps and pottery fromMystic Water Soaps and Rose Fennell Pottery.

I made a beeline for the Eve’s Cheese tent to sample their delicious cows’ milk cheeses. The zesty horseradish cheddar stood out and I snapped it up, already imagining the decadent grilled cheese sandwich I would make with it.

2 slices bread

½ teaspoon Dijon mustard

¼ cup arugula or other lettuce

2 slices tomato

¼ cup shredded Eve’s Horseradish Cheddar

1 teaspoon oil or butter

Heat a grill pan or panini press over medium high heat.

Brush one slice of the bread with the Dijon mustard. Load up the bread with the arugula, tomato slices, and shredded cheese then top it with the second slice of bread.

Lightly brush the grill pan or panini press with the oil or butter. Add the sandwich and use a spatula or heavy pot to press the sandwich in to the hot pan. Cook the sandwich until the cheese begins to melt and the bread crisps and browns, about 2 minutes, then flip to cook the other side.

Remove the sandwich from the pan and serve immediately.
