Children Help O'Malley Plant Tree in Upper Marlboro

Youth celebrates Earth Day at local community center.

"Do you know what day today is?" Gov. Martin O'Malley asked the children at the Upper Marlboro Community Center.

"Earth Day!" they responded.

On a rainy and chilly Friday, O'Malley (D) visited the secluded community center and helped a group of children plant a tree for Earth Day. "Young people are the future of this planet," O'Malley said before the tree planting. "They absolutely get it. They understand this natural beauty is not going to care for itself."

After holding a brief class inside the center's basketball court, O'Malley and the children ventured into the rain to plant the tree. For more information on the state's Plant Trees Initiative, visit trees.maryland.gov.
