A flight crew from Prince George's County Police Department has been "instrumental" in helping pass a Senate bill that was later signed into law on May 2. According to the PGPD, Cpl. Todd Dolihite and Cpl. Christopher Elrod—pilots on PGPD's aviation unit—helped Maryland senators pass a bill that would "make it a crime to knowingly and willfully shine, point, or focus the beam of a laser pointer on a pilot operating an aircraft." The pilots suffered serious injuries to their eyes on Jan. 8, 2013, after they were blinded by a commercial grade laser, according to police. Proponents of the death penalty in Maryland announced Friday that they will launch a petition to overturn the repeal signed into law this week by Governor Martin O'Malley. Baltimore County State's Attorney Scott Shellenberger and Washington County Del. Neil Parrott will spearhead and effort to obtain the 55,736 signatures required to add a referendum to the 2014 ballot, giving voters the opportunity to overturn the death penalty repeal. Prince George's County runaway and homeless youth will now have a safe haven where they can receive help and support. County and community officials gathered Thursday to officially open "Promise Place," the county's first publicly supported shelter for youth. County Executive Rushern L. Metrorail to go to OT if Caps do.
Metrorail, which has a station near Verizon Center (Gallery Place/Chinatown), will stay open an hour later if any Washington Capitals hockey playoff games run late or go into overtime, according to The Washington Post. The Capitals open their quest for the Stanley Cup against the New York Rangers on at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. Last year, Game 3 of the Capitals’ playoff series against the Rangers went to triple overtime, ending well after midnight—when Metro typically closes on weekdays. County council seeks feedback on FY 14 budget proposals.
The Prince George's County Council will be holding a budget hearing tonight at 7 p.m. to gather feedback on the proposed county FY 2014 operating budget, six year capital education program, and the Prince George's County Board of Education budget, as well as the proposed budgets for the redevelopment authority, revenue authority and industrial development authority, according a press release. The proposed FY 2013 county budget totals roughly $3.24 billion, an increase of 0.6 percent over the current budget. The public hearing will be held in the Council Hearing Room of the Prince George's County Administration Building in Upper Marlboro. Labor Department workers have already begun taking unpaid leave.
Since October of 2012, Patch has been reporting on the potential effects of sequestration in the DC area, and in March, we detailed some of the thousands of workers that could be furloughed if lawmakers were unable to reach an accord on spending issues. April 21, 2013, was identified by the Department of Defense as the first date that the furloughs could begin. Now that date has arrived and The Washington Post is reporting that some federal employees have already begun to take their unpaid time off.
