Who Built That?

Recently, I awoke at 5 a.m. to the sound of my 6-month old daughter Amelia crying. When I entered her dark room to soothe her, I saw my wife, struggling to stay awake, holding Amelia in one arm as she was attempting to work on her barely lit computer screen with her other arm. My wife Paula is an entrepreneur and a small business owner. She also happens to be a first generation immigrant, who suffered through much chasing her American dream—all of her hard work culminating in her pledging allegiance to our flag as part of her citizenship ceremony. We both remember this as one of the proudest days of our lives.

I am writing of this incident because it succinctly describes a scenario repeating itself all over America today. Small business owners are making incredible sacrifices in their struggles to keep their businesses afloat. This is the reason why the president’s “you didn’t build that” comment has infuriated Americans across the political spectrum. The simple fact is that my wife did build “that.” She built her business, through countless hours of hard work and a commitment to a quality work product. I marvel daily at the countless hours she spends at her home office designing and repairing small business websites. She is the very epitome of the American dream, collectively enhanced but most importantly, self-made and personally driven.

The president’s statements are equally infuriating because he is attempting to create a fissure between Americans where there isn’t one. No Republican I am aware of is running for office on a platform of no taxes, no roads, no teachers and no military. I cite these examples because the president chose to mention the use of roads, the work of good teachers and the development of the backbone of the modern internet, through a military research initiative, as examples of how government should be the primary recipient of accolades for individual success. This is absurd and displays a backward logic which is hard to justify. It is the very success of people, such as my wife, willing to put their names behind a business endeavor, with no guarantee of success, that finance government projects. It is my wife’s, along with millions of others struggling for a better tomorrow, sweat, toil and willingness to take a risk that has made America exceptional amongst nations, not its roads.

The economy is clearly struggling. Americans are hurting and they are scared. Scared that for the first time, yesterday may have been the best it was ever going to be. This outlook has never been a component of our national psyche. The president’s statements will haunt him in this election as they echo all over our vast country. As my wife and I struggle through this historically poor economic recovery, I feel the pain of Americans hoping and praying that there is a better tomorrow and I ask the president to stop creating division by asking who built what, and to focus on getting our growing legion of unemployed Americans, just asking for a chance to build anything, back to work.

This is a moron for a National Leader who just doesn't get it. He believes that he is the master and knows what is best for the workers. He needs a reality check. This country was made great by better men than him.

NOPOWER - talk about racism - I voted for him as an alternative to Sara Palin - I fought side by side with 'non-whites' while you sat at home, This President is a lieing SOB who pushed through ObamaCare on the platform that it wasn't a tax and then argued in front of th Supreme Court that it was. Lies are Lies are Lies and his non-military serving ass needs to be held accountable. That is the reality.
The Supreme Court called him and his administration liars - what else is there?
Take your racist attitude and shove it.

The fake outrage on this is hilarious. He was referring to roads and bridges:

"If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business. you didn’t build that. "

As in "if you've got a business, you didn't build the roads and bridges." The issue is Obama broke up the flow of his statement which gave the media a chance to grab only that sentence.

His larger point is obvious: people don't build their businesses; government does. The roads and bridges are there for all, built with taxpayer dollars, but only a small proportion go out and start businesses and hire people. They are to be commended, not degraded.

Being such a great speaker, and all, I believe he wouldn't have made such an obvious mistake when he said this, if what you say is true.

Why would he refer to "roads and bridges" as "that"? Shouldn't he have said, "Somebody invested in roads and bridges, and if you've got a business, you didn't build those."

Obama is a hard left amateur. Big deal, everyone knows that. The worst part about his "you didn't build that" off-the-cuff Freudian slip is that it's not even original. The guy is President of the United States, and the best he can do is to plagiarize some two-bit socialist Senate candidate.

Now, all you fools defending Obama on the grounds that he "misspoke," please go back and watch Fauxcahontas Warren say the exact same thing that Obama said...and she left no doubt that she meant every word of it. That kind of socialist crap plays pretty well in the Peoples Republic of Massachusetts...not so well nationwide out of the mouth of the President.

Note to Obama: If you're going to focus-group test your campaign rhetoric, I suggest you find a focus group a little more diverse than Massachusetts...where Stalin or Lenin would today give Brown a run for his money.

So if he was referring to roads and bridges, why should a business builder pay a disproportionate amount to the worker who uses the same roads and bridges ? I've worked as many as three jobs at once to build a business that I believed in: no gov't grants, no handouts, no entrepreneurial leadership in my mostly-public education. We're not riding one missed step, we're riding four years of failed policy and a mentality that is unraveling our economy.

I'm not anti-tax. I realize taxes pay for public education--I was actually trying to make the point that most public schools don't equip people to become business owners.

The question is where does it end? At a certain, point many small biz owners have had to revisit the cost of operating their biz vs the cost of paying taxes. When the cost becomes too oppressive, they close up shop, cut staff loose, and go do something else--meaning the gov't loses revenue and the economy loses jobs.

Business should pay some taxes. And it should be fair depending upon the impact on public resources; but not restrictive By being so tax-heavy, we are becoming a nation that disincentives small business.

LOL, I think it's great that conservatives are riding this one partial misquote/mis-step. Because it absolutely was one.

The thing is, Romney is good for two of these a week. Seriously. The more he talks, the more contradictions come out of his mouth, it's pure comedic gold.

Republicans have been creating division for a couple decades now, anyone with a fully functioning brain not seeing it is simply in denial.
Obama's just calling them out on it now, which is part of why I like him as a person (although not the greatest President).
However, the Koch media machine is extremely powerful and well funded by the same wealthy populace that have benefitted from "trickle down" economics of the past era. Meanwhile the Democrats are positively awful at messaging and that’s on them.

Lets also not forget what got us in this ‘Great Recession’/borderline Depression. Hint: We were in good shape in 2000.

Look, entitlement reform and reductions absolutely need to take place in our government. Our government on the federal level does need to spend a good bit less - but this applies fairly equally to both domestic/entitlement and military spending. Republicans claim they want tax reform, yet they’ve all signed a blood oath to not raise taxes at all. Yeah, contradiction much?

Who honestly buys into this stuff?

Yeah Tim, I'm sure the sudden job loss and their long term affects following the 9/11 attacks had nothing to do with it. I'm sure the massive deregulation on the mortgage industry by the Clinton administration had nothing to do with it. I'm sure the domino affect of the market collapse and tremendous job loss numbers had nothing to do with it. I'm sure the current administration's lack of even something as common as a federal budget that would show the world wide financial investment community that we as a nation have our house in order so to speak, has nothing to do with it.

JustaBill: Ofcourse Clinton has his share of the blame. However, let's not forget his hand was forced because Republicans won the midterm election in 1998 and it wasn't close.
Both parties are guilty of this economic situation to varying degrees. Absolutely, I think they are both terrible in their own ways. Democrtas are not immune from warmongering, as IIRC, Democrats controlled the Senate back when GWB declared war on Iraq and they passed it cleanly without partisan argument.

Now if you were informed about the budget as you were about deregulation, you'd know:
a) it's not the President's job to produce or pass a budget
b) Obama tried, using a balanced approach based on the bi-partisan Gang of Six recommendation - it was shot down in Congress and it wasn't close.

My view on the economy moving forward is this:

1) Romney is a fraud. His word is meaningless. He contradicts himself daily - at least the days he opens his mouth. Outside of appreciating Israel 10 times more then Obama seems to and inflaming Palestine in the process, Romney doesn't stand for anything.

2) Republicans categorically refuse to raise any taxes on anyone. This is completely counterintutive to reducing a budget deficit of this size. This economic situation we find ourselves in must be resolved by a lot of spending cuts across the board - combined with increased taxation (mostly via tax reform), on a progressive scale.
it's the most practical way.

If not for the process we would have been in chaos long ago from keeping a civil society. But years of telling false story's they eventually become fact false facts that mislead people to degrade into chaos as we see today and yet when a remark the “master knows best”? Comments like this these members of our society are not feeling the invisible chain and ball attached to their leg. If this "Change" continues to destroy or freedoms of building a company that pays taxes so government can build roads bridges and support our military it will be done in invisible leg irons and not free to build a better life. Life is hard and when you better yourself and lifestyle and create opportunities for others is not selfish. All of wife's hard work culminating in her pledging allegiance to our flag as part of her citizenship ceremony should be proud. I know a few that has gone thru the same process, Yes be proud to be American and enjoy the American Holidays like the 4th of July! Its not a day for just a picnic or party but for real Americans with inalienable rights and the men and women who fought, died, and survived only to know what the GRAND OLD FLAG stands for! Taken IN context it is WORSE! It is the FIRST paragraph that is the worse. "I’m always struck by people who think, well, it must be because I was just so smart. There are a lot of smart people out there. It must be because I worked harder than everybody else. Let me tell you something -- there are a whole bunch of hardworking people out there."
He denigrated business starters as no smarter than anyone else, not harder working than anyone else and anyone who has listened to him knows he thinks big government is the way.

He was NOT talking about roads and bridges when he spoke. No one can now decide what he "meant" since we all know what he SAID! He hates America and its founding and all it stands for. Not one person who does love the country would set out to "fundamentally transform" something they love. You do that to the thigs you hate.

If the President was referring to "roads & bridges" then he would have said "you didn't build THOSE. He also could have said "you didn't build the infrastructure that your business utilizes".

Question: Why did it take almost 48 hours for the President and Democrats to come up with the response that he was referring to "roads & bridges"? If it was just taken out of context, wouldn't that have been an immediate response when this was first reported on?

"Corporations are people too".
"PETA is not happy my dog likes fresh air".
"My sons are all adults and they've made decisions about their careers and they've chosen not to serve in the military".
" I've always been a rodent".
"I'm not concerned about the very poor".

Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business -- you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen. The Internet didn’t get invented on its own. Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet.

The point is, is that when we succeed, we succeed because of our individual initiative, but also because we do things together. There are some things, just like fighting fires, we don’t do on our own. I mean, imagine if everybody had their own fire service. That would be a hard way to organize fighting fires."

I guess if we can argue about birth certificates we can argue what the speech means?

Obama would only do this if he knows he's in trouble politically. And why did Clinton consent to do this--so if Hillary decides she wants to run in 2016, she will have the backing of ALL of the Democrats. Bill Clinton has already said in just so many words that Obama's plans for job growth have not worked and will not work. Remember Clintons words, "The era of big government is over!"

Who built that? Who "saved" that?

GM Stock Hits New Lows, Company in Turmoil
In June 2009, GM filed for Obama-managed bankruptcy, costing the taxpayer some $50 billion. The vast majority of that cash was never paid back by GM. In November 2010, GM issued a new initial public offering at a price of $33 per share. Today, GM stock is trading at approximately $19.36, down about 40% from its initial price.

And the executive turmoil in the company is reaching fever pitch. Opel, a majority-owned subsidiary of GM, dumped CEO Karl-Friedrich Stracke about two weeks ago. GM Vice Chairman Steve Girsky replaced him. Analysts immediately claimed, “GM appeared to be panicking as the change comes so soon after a turnaround plan for the struggling Opel was approved and a replacement was not named.” Another analyst stated, “The timing of today’s announcement bodes poorly for the condition of GM’s European business.” Then, Opel’s new design chief Dave Lyon was thrown out of the building before even beginning his job. Within the week, global marketing honcho Joel Ewanick got tossed.

"Obama's Labor Department on Monday issued "guidance" to the states, telling them that a federal law requiring advance notice of mass layoffs does not apply to the layoffs that may occur in January as a result of automatic budget cuts known as "sequestration. Under the WARN Act -- The Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act -- companies with more than 100 employees must give 60 days' notice if there is to be a mass layoff during any 30-day period for 500 or more employees (or for 50-499 employees if they make up at least 33% of the employer's active workforce). "
What curious timing of this change of the law by Obama.

If the automatic budget cuts kick in on Jan. 2 -- as they will if Congress can't reach a deficit-reduction agreement -- layoff notices would have to go out no later than Nov. 2. The general election is on Nov. 6.

According to the IRS the roughly top two percent pay about half the income tax collected. The bottom 50% pay no income tax and many collect payments because of their low income. Perhaps we should be encouraging those who are willing to put their money into business and keep things moving rather than sitting on their backside collecting money they haven't earned. This is not to say there aren't people that truly need and should get government help, but there are also too many that make a career out of not working and paying taxes.

That is the one fact that is not debatable in this entire debate and the one indisputable fact that makes all the arguments about the rick "paying their fair share" a moot point but it keeps coming up! It's like arguing that the sun rises in the east. The sun rises in the east. The rich "pay their fair share". No argument.

"but there are also too many that make a career out of not working and paying taxes."

If you could live better than your abilities, education, effort or willingness would otherwise allow, what would you do? If the alternative is working and having less things with no effort, what would you do? Not having abilities, education, effort or willingness, you should not live better than a person who works for $(pick a number) an hour for 40 hours a week. That is a simple fact of life.

If you like then you can write an extra check to the IRS for all that you feel you owe society. Nothing is stopping you from doing so right now.

FIFA. I doubt that Romney (or any wealthy person or anyone with money to invest who is financial savvy) is sitting on his wealth. It is invested in companies (through stocks, mutual funds, bonds or other investment vehicles). Therefore, his "wealth" is providing jobs. I assume you, like I, live in Maryland. I read an article recently that Maryland has lost a large number of millionaires and companies aren't moving their offices to Maryland because of the high tax rates. What do you think that means to the Maryland economy? The collective "we" (including the millionaires) buy houses, cars, groceries, eat out, etc. Even if we are not directly paying taxes on the money we earn, we are supporting the economy. Our purchases means that someone has a job and the taxes paid on these purchases are going to the state and local government.

Comment_arrow

FIFA_archived

@ Paul Bowling - your comment is appreciated and on the face of it seems very rational. However, your theory has holes in it.

Wealthy people do invest their money in many vehicles, generally to maximize their wealth without regard to the potential effects of that investment. Examples.

Romney has invested substantial sums of money in overseas investments, not necessarily because his rate of return is higher on foreign investments than American investments, but his "after tax" rate is higher. What I mean by "after tax" is his rate of return after deducting income taxes paid. By sheltering money he is not paying his fair rate, albeit perhaps legal rate, to the United States and I find that act repulsive.

Investing in normal stocks and bonds in the United States almost never creates jobs. The companies invested in do not get any proceeds of that money. All that happens is investors are trading money amongst themselves. New issues of stock may create jobs, but that is a tiny fraction of the activity.

So the wealthy who do not work anymore but only invest as their job, also get to pay Zero Social Security and Medicare tax on those earnings and if the hold their "investments" for a year pay a long term gain rate of tax of 15%. While wage earners pay up to 33% tax while the vast middle income bracket paying marginal rates of 28% plus their Social Security and Medicare.

I don't call that a fair system at all, instead it is a system rigged by the wealthy and influential.

Comment_arrow

FIFA_archived

@Paul Bowling - regarding Maryland losing jobs because of "high" taxes. We have a system in our country wherein 50 states and foreign countries compete with each other to entice companies to move there. This has existed for many moons. Tax rates correlate directly to the amount of services provided. Once a tax is paid to the government that money doesn't disappear, although I am sure some posters will say it does. That money gets spent on goods and services and as you indicate, that spending creates jobs. If I didn't know better I would say you must have supported the President's stimulus plan as you believe spending money creates jobs.

What does it mean to the Maryland economy. When you compare Maryland to all of the other states it is doing well on all measures of economics, unemployment and job growth.

I don't like taxes any more than the next person. I don't like seeing money wasted as much as the next person as well.

Below is what is written at the end of his July 25th blog on the Severna Park Patch.

Unlike most, I welcome the president to say that government has contributed to the success of many small businesses, but if he wants credit for the successes, he needs to take the blame for the failures. From the looks of it, there have been many more failures than successes as of late. The government, and in particular the president, are not willing to take the blame for anything and continue to blame our current failures on an administration that left office almost 4 years ago.
