Movie Night: 'What To Expect...', 'Battleship,' 'Dictator' Open Friday

Free Army Band Concert Monday in Bowie

The 257th Army Band will be performing a free concert on May 21 at the Bowie Center for the Performing Arts.

Looking for an evening of patriotic music and entertainment? The 257th Army Band is holding a free concert on Monday, May 21 at 7:30 p.m. at the Bowie Center for the Performing Arts. The mission of the band is, "to provide musical support for the troops and provide community relations performances using our concert band and music teams." The concert will include music by Sousa, Grainger, Copland, Michael Buble' and the Beatles, and the saxophone section will step forward to perform a collection of the most popular songs on the sax. Also featured will be the 257th Army Band's newest performance group, "Brigadier Brass." Update: 6:30 p.m. -  Prince George's County Executive Rushern Baker has issued a press release expressing his condolences over the passing of local music legend Chuck Brown.  The statement reads in full:  “My thoughts and prayers go out to the family, friends and countless fans of Chuck Brown.  It is a sad day for so many in Prince George’s County, the Washington region, and throughout the world. Chuck Brown left an indelible mark on our hearts and minds with his very distinctive voice and incredible genre of music that he created, Go-Go. Last Chance: See a Play, or Audition for One

  The St. George Players will present their last two perfomances of Noises Off this weekend on May 4 and May 5 at 8:30 p.m. at 7010 Glenn Dale Road in Glenn Dale. The comedic play follows the on and off stage antics of a performing troupe.Tickets are $15 for adults and $8 for students and seniors.  Aspiring actors and actresses, today is your last chance to audition for the Bowie Community Theater production of Love, Sex, and the IRS. Auditions will be held tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the Bowie Playhouse. They are casting three to four women and four to five men, ages 20 to 30 and 40 to 65. Pirate Fest Sails Into Upper Marlboro

The family event will feature swashbuckling reenactors and a treasure hunt.

Take a trip back in time to the 18th century, when pirates still prowled the Patuxent River, by attending Pirate Fest at Darnell’s Chance Museum in Upper Marlboro on Saturday, May 5. The event is geared towards children ages 5 to 12, but the whole family is sure to have a blast, said Darnell’s Chance Museum docent Meghan Decker. Upon arrival, children will be taught how to become a pirate from swabbing the decks to walking the plank. For each pirate activity they complete, children will receive coins, which they will then exchange for a map. After completing the “treasure hunt,” participants will receive a prize and an honorary pirate certificate. Summer Movie Season Starts Next Week

Hollywood rolls out its list of blockbusters with The Avengers.

A few sequels, one or two reboots, and Johnny Depp in weird costumes. The summer movie season is about to start. MTV is calling 2012 a nerdy movie summer, and also one of the biggest. Says MTV: It's a crowded landscape to be sure; you'll want to spend your hard-earned theatergoing cash wisely if you want to weed out the fantastic, can't-miss movies from the [ugly], must-miss ones.  Here's a few of the movies that will be making a premiere this summer. Local Students Celebrate County History With Mural

Ring in the county's 317th birthday with a visit to the 12-piece mural created by local high school students.

Students from Bowie, Dr. Henry A. Wise Jr., and Frederick Douglass High schools were among those that contributed to a 12-piece mural in celebration of the founding of Prince George’s County, which happened 317 years ago this week, reported the Gazette. About 140 high school students from 12 Prince George's County high schools contributed to the mural, which is permanently on display in the Mall at Prince Georges. The mural is entitled “Gorgeous Prince George’s: Then and Now” in celebration of the county’s founding. Students worked on the mural from March 2011 and June 2011, reported the Gazette. Stephen Hurd Performs, Signs CDs Sunday

The Stellar Award winning recording artist and Upper Marlboro church minister of music will perform songs and sign autographs at a Silver Spring church Sunday.

An Upper Marlboro church's minister will be performing songs from his CD and signing autographs Sunday in Colesville, according to The Examiner. Stephen Hurd, who is the minister of music at First Baptist Church of Glenarden, recently released a live recording of worship music, "Times of Refreshing." He recorded the CD at his home church. The CD also features performances from Jason Nelson, Anthony Evans and Deonte Gray.
