Upper Marlboro Hoopster Following Dad's Path

David Golladay was a redshirt freshman last season at Mount St. Mary's in college basketball.

Like father, like son?

There is no doubt about it with the Golladay family of Upper Marlboro. James Golladay played one year of college basketball in Canada at Saint Mary's in Novia Scotia after a prep career at Bishop McNamara High School in Forestville.

His son, David, was a redshirt freshman last season for Division I Mount St. Mary's of Frederick County.

David Golladay, a graduate of Wise High School, averaged 5.3 points per game last season and started 30 of 31 games. He attended Largo High for one year before transferring to Wise. Golladay also attended James Madison Middle School in Upper Marlboro.

As a redshirt, Golladay sat out the 2009-10 season at The Mount. He averaged 16 points per game as a senior at Wise High and was honorable mention all-Met via The Washington Post.

"It was tough to sit out a whole year since I was used to playing a lot in high school," David Golladay told Patch from Mount St. Mary's, where he is taking summer classes. "All I was doing was practicing."

The shooting guard also averaged 3.3 rebounds per contest and had eight points against Penn State and former head coach Ed DeChellis, who is now the head coach at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis.

Golladay, 20, said his father had some good advice from his days of playing college hoops. "He said it was a good experience. You have to make sure you keep your head on straight since there are a lot distractions," said Golladay, who hopes to play a key role as a sophomore.

Coming out of high school, he looked into the programs at Navy, St. Francis (PA) and George Mason before heading to The Mount. Another local player for the Mountaineers last season was Danny Thompson, a graduate of Flowers High and a junior last season.

His sister, Michaylin, is a standout track performer at Clemson in South Carolina and has earned all-American status.

Riverdale Baptist grad not drafted

Tommy Winegardner, a former basball standout at Riverdale Baptist, hoped to get drafted in June by a Major League Baseball team.

But Winegardner, a pitcher and infielder at Cumberland in Tennessee, was not taken in the draft. This past season he hit .341 with eight homers and he was also 1-0 with an ERA of 4.50 in 10 games as a pitcher.

He was featured, at the age of 14 in 2004, in a New York Times article about the making of top young baseball players.

A former player at Riverdale Baptist, he hit .289 with one homer in 114 at bats for the Big South Conference team.
