SPEAK OUT: 'Mermaids' Film on Discovery Sparks Questions

A Discovery Channel documentary about the existence of mermaids has people talking, and not just about mermaids.

If you’re heading to the ocean for vacation, you might be on the lookout for more than the usual sea creatures. And, we're not talking about the typical summer shark scare.

Mermaids made a recent splash – no pun intended – this week when the Discovery Channel aired its documentary, Mermaids: The Body Found, which originally was shown May 27.

Currently, the search term “mermaid body found” is No. 1 on Google Trends with over 100,000 searches, but USA Today reports that the scene in which a mermaid’s body is found by a young boy was staged.

The Discovery Channel, which is headquartered in Silver Spring, is known as “the world’s #1 nonfiction media company,” according to its website.

The show’s website asks: “What if there’s a kernel of truth that lives beneath the legend of the mythical mermaid?”

However, an editor’s note provides the disclaimer that “this two-hour special is science fiction based on some real events and scientific theory.”

It appears not everyone read that part, or they chose to ignore it.

“I honestly think it is selfish of people to think we are the only human creatures on earth," one YouTube viewer commented, according to CNN. “There is stuff out there we can’t explain.”

Keeley Belva, a spokesperson for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, told CNN that the organization had recently received questions about the existence of mermaids, which she attributes, in part, to the release of the documentary.

NOAA recently published a statement on its website saying there is no evidence that “aquatic humanoids” have ever existed.

But, CNN reported that John Athanson, the public relations manager for Weeki Wachee (otherwise known as the “City of Live Mermaids”) Springs State Park near Tampa, believes mermaids are real.

"If you ask me, (mermaids) do exist," Athanson told CNN. "They exist, and they exist right here in Weeki Wachee."

So what do you think? Did you watch the documentary? Is it possible the mysterious, mythical creatures do exist? Tell us in comments.

It is my belief that mermaids do not exist. So there.

Same with ghosts.

No, ghosts do exist. There is one that lives in my apartment; it also stays down the street sometime. It likes to make me peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and flot around while it says "Woooooooo, wooooooooo." I usually tell it to get a life, but it never does.
But on a serious note, I cant believe the fudgin' Discovery Channel put this garbage on. I thought they aired serious crap, like actual discoveries, maybe? Next thing you know they will be right the with the SciFi channel showing wrestling. What are you going to do when when this 60 foot Mesozoic Python comes for you brother? OOOOhhh Yeeeaaaaaa!

Where's your proof?
Mermaid do exist. This documentary is more proof than we need, but the fact that I can give you is they do- because I am a mermaid.
As crazy or psycho as that may sound, I'm telling the truth. I've been looking for contact information for Dr. Paul Robertson and Dr. Rebecca Davis to tell them this. I'm spiritually a mermaid; I know what these creatures are, and how to explain who they are. And why.
A mermaid doesn't have to be like Ariel- it can be a terrifying, odd, twisted-like creature. But it doesn't mean they don't exist.

The opinions and theories expressed in this documentary are no more far fetched than saying we were made from ashes by God (who nobody can prove they've seen) then let to live crazy and sometimes violent lives. Evolution happens all the time, with all sorts of creatures, to think that we are an exception to that is ridiculous. All of what was suggested as to possible evolution histories is just that, a mere suggestion. Perhaps we, like the brown bear, split off into two seperate groups. One evolving into aquatic creatures, and the other group evolving into land dwellers. Either way, proof is not available that it's true, nor is it readily provable that it's false.

Really if you don't believe that a species could evolve in a multitude of ways your just plain ignorant. There are may species of bear that are from the same gene pool as well as birds, cats and dogs, ect. Just stay in you little bubble and close your eyes if it makes you feel better but for those of use who are looking for something more than just the daily retinue of life and some discovery of the bigger picture please don't go and add your negative energy to something that neither of us knows the whole truth about.

I believe there are "mermaids." I dont believe in the whole evolution thing. I think our government needs to be honest with us and they only allowed us to see what they wanted us to see on that episode. I believe the government payed BP oil Company off and made it look like an accident and there's also something in Louisiana that they are hiding. The government has too much power when they were supposed to be representatives to THE PEOPLE. So why is it that we know so little about the truth or is it that we know the truth and have been told its just fables and myth-ology

HA HA HA! When is your next show? Are you serous? Maybe they don't say, because they don't know. Have you ever thought of that? The government paid BP to blow upa rig? Why? Was there a war raging between the flounder and the red fish species? And the red fish were winning, so President Obama talked with the leader of the flounder, Mr. Glu Glu. And they devised a plan to have the bulk of the red fish army to be around the oil platform, and they would blow it up. Just like the Contras, huh?
You know, that makes since now. And to help to rebuild the flounder population, President Obama got with the Texas Parks & Wildlife and Princess Bubbles, and they all came upwith the plan that flounder gigging should be illegal in Texas.
Man, you are blowing my mind.
And maybe the government isn't telling us that the earth isnt rotating around the sun, aliens are pulling the sun around the earth. And weare paying them in gold, and that's the real reason why the priceof gold is going up.
Wow! My mind is blown!
I love you conspiracy theorists, you come up with off the wall ideas. And just because you dont know all the facts, the horrible government must have a hand in it to make thierpockets fat.

I was at Myrtle Beach, was around 11 yrs old and started to drown... something -not human- saved me. I dont remember much anymore other than a strange light, a calm feeling and a presence of something there. I hate a liar so no we dont teach santa, toothfairy's, easter bunnies and etc.. What they say in the documentary is these creatures are human-like, not humans with fins, big difference. Monkeys and apes are human-like also. From a scientist stand point and seeing many odd things created in the lab with genetic engineering and stem cell research it's possible a creature like this exists but still it's not human. This was very possibly all created by the government to take attention away from what was really going on!

I didn't say I thought the documentary was true, but scientifically, and this is from an advanced scientific standpoint, you can produce just about anything in a lab. Mix the DNA of an aquatic species with an amphibian and you get interesting results! No different then breeding a horse with a donkey except it's done in a lab.

The government issued a statement to clear up the misunderstanding but MarketWatch's Jon Friedman says that wasn't necessary.Have a look. http://liveoncampus.com/wire/show/3390258

Okay, this show is similar to all of those other shows on Discovery, or Science Channel, or History, or whatever that posit scenarios. It is up to the individual to make up their minds whether or not they believe the scenario could be real or not. So what if there are not mermaids, you can say the same for aliens, ghosts and cryptozoological creatures of any type. But do not ridicule other people for what they choose to believe or not believe. So what if someone wants to believe if mermaids are real. Let them state their opinion. If they want to believe there is some grand conspiracy involving the US government, you are not going to change their mind. These posts are for opinions, so let others have their opinion to share.

I agree! Sad because the comment section was created for just that, COMMENTS. Any person's opinion is no better than another and that should be left at that. Sadly instead some people feel the need to put people down and try to make others look bad for posting an honest opinion (don't worry the only idiot is the one who started it and probably because they have a need to make themselves feel better about themselves.)
If the person or people who created this page wanted this kind of going at it back and forth it would have said DEBATES instead of COMMENTS and wouldn't have said tell us what you think but who cares what you think.
Oh and BTW just because the comment may have typoes "oops" doesn't mean anyone else has the right to tell the person who wrote it to go back to school, that's just rude!
Oh and to the gentlemen above (and I say that lightly) just because you are in one of our Nation's fine Services doesn't mean you know everything especially that of what goes on with the government, they've been hiding things, from the people of the United States, probably right from the beginning.

FYI; Google "dolphins helping people to fish", that part is true; google the Egyptian cave drawings, that part is true, haven't googled the parts about finding spears etc. Now I like to watch Ancient Aliens on the History Channel, the UFO stuff, the Big Foot stuff, blah, blah blah. Read the books of Charles Fort and your mind is opened forever, but, I think Discovery screwed this up by not making clear that it was a speculative type show. The underlying theme was the "man is evil, destroys others, heavy handed government" nonsense IMHO that took away from the basic premises of "could apes have adapted to the water and over millions of years produced an unknown species of merpeople". That is an interesting idea, again, IMHO.

Daniel: have you heard of bestowing bay wreaths on war heroes? also used for protection. In legend it was the nymph Daphne that was turned into a Bay tree by the Gods after she had asked for help to escape from Appolo. Knowing this is legend, why would Nicolas Culpeper make the comment in 1652 "... neither witch nor devil, thunder nor lightning will hurt a man where a bay tree is." How can you acknowledge the results/evidence or history of something but still claim it to be outlandish? instead of coming up with something logical to prove me otherwise, you respond with violence or stupidity. You can't force someone to believe in what you believe in (hence religious wars). To the people who don't believe in "mer-people"... we aren't trying to save you or anything we are sharing our opinions with each other, not a bunch of idiotic critics!

Shannon, I believe in God and that Jesus is the way, the bible, and angels protecting us.. which it also says there's special angels for children. definately looking at that from a christian point of view, ofcourse God saved me. I, however, don't find it impossible to believe that there's so much that we have yet to discover in Gods great big ocean. Or we have but are too closed minded to believe in such "childish" things. also, I am so terribly allergic to cats so I would be the worst kitten sitter :) yes, women are always right and its a shame men still think they can forse women to be wrong by cussing at them. My husband watched it also and he doesn't know what to believe, I think he's relating it to The Little Mermaid but also trying to look at the open-minded point of view also. I do understand, when I was little I told my teacher to stop lying to me about those dinosaurs ;) .. since I was raised in a very religous home I had always thought Adam and Eve were created first. I believe a cyclops head was also found but was said to be a wooly mammoth head idk, anyway alot of things are strange but possible especially when you have ancient hieroglyphics in different parts of the world.

Let's calm down and think about things for a moment. They created the whole documentary from a couple items.
The kids video may be real...may be fake.
The Navy used a sonar weapon so powerfull that it kills marine life......why?
The navy was seen collecting something on the beach...but did not touch the whales.

The mermaid story is a distraction. Just like aliens / area 51 is a distraction for the advanced weapon systems they are testing.

Many people think that the USA are performing advanced genetic engineering. It's public knowledge that they have a GM salmon. The millitary is usually 20 years more advanced than what is known publicly. Three years ago they found the Montauk monster close to Plum Island NY. Who knows what they are tring to combine.

Instead of using dolphins for helping out the Navy.......maybe thy needed something smarter and having greater dexterity. Having a man's mental capacity... Having hands to do precise work....Swims and breaths as a fish....hmmmm. sounds like a great weapon system.

Now suppose that the Navy did have such creatures developed for them. They created an entire team of them..(A GMO seal team so to speak)...That developed its own communication skills.

Reply

Shane

12:17 am on Sunday, August 12, 2012

Problems develop as the new beings no longer obey their Navy masters....and began to flee. The Navy had to hunt them down before the public found out about them. Loud sonar would drive the beasts..and when close enough to the shore, hit them with the weapon to kill them. A navy team would collect the remains from the shore.

Sorry...mythical mermaids not real. Genetically Modified Organisms are.

I found the show to be very compelling, enough that I ended up here. I don't normally leave comments and a good reason why is because of what I read in some of the previous ones here.
It disgusts me how some people have to treat others and just for stating their beliefs. They have to put us down or make someone feel bad just because they don't agree, WELL, maybe that's what they say, truth is they probably don't have enough confidence about themselves to just leave a normal comment.
That being said, I hope the story is true, kudos to them! If there are mermaids are in existence they would have to be pretty smart to have survived this long without being found because as sure as they are they will be hunted down and dove into to see what makes them tick just like any other creature that's different from us in this world. I mean really look how critical we are of one another from one end of the states to another and from one end of the world to another, they wouldn't have a chance. Oh and the sound of the supposed weapon priming up, did anyone notice it sounds eerily like the strange sounds many say they have heard coming from out of, nowhere, the sky, the earth. Just weird...

I think it is human nature to be arrogant, which is why we are not ones to readily accept something other than what we were taught. However, the bible is not proven, nor does anyone have scientific proof or a photo of god. That is called blind faith, I don't know factually if god exists but, I choose to believe. I also chose to believe that perhaps myths come from some sort of truth. I don't know of anyone who parted a sea, nor saw a mermaid, but i'm open to believing.

The documentary was sci-fi based on scientific theories. Discovery Channel aired one about DRAGONS, years ago. Very entertaining sci-fi, too. Do you remember? Now, remember those old guys who made those big drawings on corn fields and had a lot of fun after the rumors of spaceships landing spread out? People may believe whatever crazy staff they hear, as long it is reasonable and convincing: ghosts, whitchs, ufo's, big foot, you name it. It's a personal choice and having access to info and science doesn't make us more rational than we were centuries ago. This case would render a great research on mass action in Sociology.

I've just seen this show for the first time and have also read through these comments. I reserve judgement on whether I think mer-people are real or not because I did see some very interesting ancient drawings in the show. It's well documented in history that sailors across the world the world saw similar things to each other and the Bloop noise (you can hear it properly through Google) very interesting indeed. However, the ridiculous footage of the two boys screamed fake and totally discredited the whole show. It seemed way too desperate. The CGI stuff was again desperate. The believeinmermaids website looks like it was set up to appear like it was blocked by the powers that be. Seriously, would you advertise you were blocking it if you were the government? Nope.

Interesting ! Whats more intriguing is that its a gov navy boy who poo poos it and then throws another smoke grenade to belittle it and lead u into being and idiot if u think its plausible !!!!! The navy had sea-lab before they went to the moon and apparently ended the programme supposedly as they put the money into nasa for the race to the moon ! Years later we found out that they'd kept it going on the side on a smaller less public scale ! Also the scotts have the legend of the kelpie !!! Ive spoken with peeps who believe it !! If in doubt dont reason it out !!!! Assumption pro or con is being an idiot either way ! If theres smoke there's fire!
